6/5/2018 0 Comments See You Next Year! From the members of the Jaguar Journal
The Jaguar Journal, (or you may know it as that annoying email you get every morning) is coming to an end for this year. The Jaguar Journal team has been working hard all year to bring you your beloved news. The journalism team writes to inform you on all of the school activities that are taking place here at HFHS. This year many of the student reporters (Anders Prater, Avery Degerstrom, Abby Painovich, Killeen Prater, Kenidy Cessna, Rachel Painovich, Siarra Kubesh, and Todd Thomas.) have written arcticles about numerous events throughout the school year. The news team began in September with just a couple students and one teacher who was determined to make the daily news more interesting and to provide a student perspective on the things that were happening in our school. Journalism student, Anders Prater talked about how the club got started saying, “The Daily Announcements last year were very disorganized and people weren’t reading them so I decided if I wanted the announcements to change I should change them myself.” The Jaguar Journal began with the daily where we sent our own news each morning and eventually it evolved into the weekly as we began sending out larger articles at the end of the week. Throughout the course of the year, the skills of the members also evolved. Abby Painovich comments that she has “learned very many skills that [she] expects to use all throughout [her] life. It was a very beneficial and fun experience!” The news team tries to report to you in new fun ways experimenting with different things. These things include, video documentaries, articles, and we have started to put together a podcast that will be debut next year. Next year, the Jaguar Journal is hoping to continue to bring you news next year as well as to expand greatly in the ways stories are reported on as well as the number of members that make up the Jag Journal. We are looking for anyone interested in media production, photography, reporting, cinematography and anything else that can help the daily news next year. If you are interested in Joining the Jaguar journal, journalism will be offered as a class next year so you can talk to Ms Mykkanen or Mrs. B Anderson.

Last week on Tuesday the Varsity Baseball team played their final game of the season. They defeated Pine City, which placed them at the top of the great river conference. This was the first time the Jaguars won the great river conference with Jay Kreger as the head coach. They finished the season with only one loss in conference play and entered the subsection tournament seeded second. The boys won their first playoff game game a dominant 10-0 game against Mcgregor. They went on to play Ogilvie where they put together another ten run shutout. The boys batted well in both games but had a few errors in each. Then last night the Jags came out to face the Braham Bombers for the sub-section championship, they faced a pitcher that Coach Jay Kreger called, “The best pitcher we’ve seen all year.” and still managed to scratch out four hits and three runs to win 3-0. The team played excellent defense that backed up Tavis Vissers outstanding pitching performance. The victory is sending the Jags to the section tournament next monday where they will play Pine River Backus. 6/1/2018 0 Comments Thank You Raechel! From the members of the Jaguar Journal
Raechel Painovich is one of our most dedicated journalists for the Jaguar Journal. Everyday, she updates lunches, sports, special announcements, and what's going on. If you’ve seen what she’s done, it’s well put together and thought through. It’s about time she gets some recognition for it. The daily news is no easy task when you have emails from coaches, teachers, and staff members flooding your inbox only five minutes before it is supposed to be sent out. Raechel, however, makes this look easy. From the outside that is. Behind the scenes she has spent countless hours getting the Jag Journal ready to send out and making sure every detail is as it should be. Raechel is in eighth grade, with a long career of high school journalism ahead of her. An interest in journalism also runs in the family, as she has a sister who is also part of the Jaguar Journal (Abby Painovich). Raechel enjoys many things. Her favorite animal is an elephant. She is involved in many sports: cross country, hockey, and softball. Her favorite color is red, and she has three siblings. When she has free time, she loves to fish\hunt and play sports. When Raechel is older she wants to be a doctor. Below is a story of one of the many adventures of Raechel Painovich as told by Killeen Prater. Killeen Prater is a lifelong friend of Raechel’s and knows her well. She tells a story of Raechel’s childhood adventure on the Munger trail. “Raechel was five years old. She was going on a bike ride with her dad. She sped up and passed her dad because he was walking as she just kept strolling along. Then, a turtle peaked her curiosity, and she picked it up and put it in her handlebar basket. Further down the trail, she found yet another turtle and had also put that one in her basket, which was now becoming an aquarium. All of a sudden, she was in town, and her dad wasn’t there. She got really scared and attempted to head home. Suddenly, in the dusk, she saw a figure approaching her. As it advanced towards toward Raechel, she biked faster and faster away from the figure. The figure yelled her name several times before she realized it was him. Her dad. Raechel greeted her father with a hug of relief and followed the trail to where they had began, with the two turtles still in Raechel’s bucket. The turtles were safe, as was little Raechel.” Thank you Raechel for all you have done; the Jaguar Journal would not have seen the success we’ve had this year without you. 6/1/2018 0 Comments Golf Season Wrap UpBy Abby Painovich The Hinckley Finlayson girls and boys 2018 golf season was postponed because of the never ending winter weather but ,nevertheless, they came out in every meet and made it count, having a ton of fun along the way. They had a lively playoff run, with the girls qualifying for section finals as a team, 4 boys qualifying for section finals as individuals, and Sophia Hopkins almost making it to the state meet, coming up just one stroke too many. Although they did not win any conference meets this season, the girls team placed 4th in their best conference meet of the season while the boys placed 3rd in their best. Both of these were out of eight conference teams. Both teams were also able to defeat Mora in a non-conference, but very competitive meet. The boys team also had one member who was named an all conference athlete; congratulations to Landon Dematti who was one of the top 13 players in their conference. Also, congratulations to seniors, Katelyn France, Ashley Golly, Savannah Morgan, Parker Klar and Kyle Nicholson on their last season of golf at Hinckley Finlayson High. Coach Grimm comments that, “they will be missed and [have] provided great leadership the past few seasons.” He is very proud of the effort and persistence that both of his teams and each and every players showed throughout the season. He is looking forward to growing as team next year. Next season, the teams are looking to improve individual as well as teams scores, to have more golf athletes qualify for all conference and to send at least a couple of golfers to state. They would also like to see more students come out for golf next year to have a stronger and larger team. Next year, Coach Grimm expects the young team to be more and experienced which he hopes will result in a winning season. He is very eager for next season so they can build off of this year and improve greatly. They are hoping to get out on the course earlier than they did this year and to have more meets. Above all else, Coach Grimm is most looking forward to “working with the kids and having fun.” Below are few pictures, taken by Daniel Lingle, at their home meet at Hinckley Grand National Golf Course. 6/1/2018 0 Comments Softball Season Wrap UpBy Raechel Painovich
Tuesday May 29, 2018 the day the girls softball team traveled to Brainerd to play the Pine River-Backus Tigers in their first game of the section tournament. They got off the bus and it was a nice 80 degree day the sun was shining and was a great day to play softball. But by the top of the fourth inning clouds had rolled in and the wind had picked up. The playing field resembled a desert in a windstorm until the rain came pouring down. The umpires were forced to postpone the game until better conditions prevailed; these conditions came on Thursday. The Jaguars’ girls softball team packed up their gear, loaded the bus and rode to finish the game that had been started days before in Brainerd where they would face the Pine River-Backus Tigers once again. The Tigers had came out strong on Tuesday, scoring 5 runs in the first 3 innings to which the Jaguars could not defend. When the Jaguars came back to resume the game on Thursday, they came out pushing hard with their backs against the wall, down 5 runs. They were able to get 3 runs, by the sixth inning, cutting the lead to a mere 2 runs. It wasn't until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Tigers scored an inside the park home run to extend their lead to 5. Making it tough for the Jags to come back. The Tigers proved to be to much for the Jaguars, forcing them to make errors, which resulted in many runs scored by the Tigers. Although well fought and fought right to the end, the Tigers ended the Jaguars’ season with a score of 8-3 and a record of 6-6 in the regular season and 9-8 overall record including playoffs. The Jaguars had a great playoff run and a season that would go down in the record books. They had many season highlights including a winning season, back to back home playoff games, Sub-Section 5A East Runner Up, and this is the deepest their playoff run has been in 17 years. Looking forward, Coach Ranger will look to his returning players, to lead the team in another winning season next year. As for seniors the team will lose Amanda Sadler, former player and now manager. Ranger is hoping for next season to have a back to back winning season, to compete for the conference championship as well as the Sub-Section championship, and to advance to state. Regardless of winning he is most looking forward to “working with a fantastic group of girls for another year!” By Killeen Prater and Siarra Kubesh
PINE CITY, MN - “I felt very achieved” said Cedric LaFave after he returned from the Section finals having once again beaten his record in the mile run. While his season is over after placing third at sections, just shy of a state qualifying run, LaFave’s mile run has earned him a spot on the wall as an HFHS record-holder. His latest mile run, at 4:36:50, beat his previously earned record of 4:37:53. Cedric has ran the mile 5 or 6 times already, and he has been striving to do better every time. When he broke the record the first time at sub-sections, Cedric said he had a feeling that he had broken the record, but couldn’t know for sure until the times were posted. Second place at sub-sections meant Cedric moved on to the Section meet. Sections were held on Wednesday, May 30th at St. John’s University. Cedric yet again broke the school record achieving a PR (personal record) for the second time this year. Cedric placed third at sections, which sadly was not quite high enough to move on and go to state, but this is not the end. Cedric plans to take his talents to cross country, hoping to improve and come back next year with an even faster time. The new school record has been set, now the track team is waiting for someone to beat it. Cedric hopes to keep improving and continue to break his record. 6/1/2018 0 Comments Track SectionsBy Kenidy Cessna
On Wednesday, several athletes from the HFHS track team went to sections at St. John’s University. The athletes had a solid showing, most notably with Cedric LaFave breaking his previously held school record by just over a second. Josey Olson, Edward Rubinek, Caleb Olson, Cedric LaFave, Kolby Fox, Josie Barstad, and Brock Bjerke all participated in the section track meet. There are many different events at sections; the activities that HFHS students competed in were, 4 x 800, open 800, 300 hurdles, shot put, 1600 (mile), and 4 x 400. Cedric broke the school record twice, one record was held by himself. He broke Jeremiah Letourneau’s record last Wednesday at subsections. Letourneau had a mile time of 4:37.56. Cedric beat Letourneau with a time of 4:37.35. He beat his own record by a little over a second on Wednesday, he had 4:36.5. Josie Barstad a highschool graduate, does the events Shot Put and Discus Throw. She did not advance to state, but was happy to have set a personal record of 36’ 3 3/4 .” “We have a very tough section and I was hoping to go to State, but it didn’t happen because we have some amazing girls who throw, “ she says. This year Josie hurt her knee and she said that also affected her performance. Josie has had a rather successful high school career in track. Competing the best of her ability throughout high school, Josie medaled and placed every year. This year was her fourth time at sections. With so many driven athletes, the HFHS track team are looking forward to a strong next season. |
