11/21/2017 0 Comments A Wednesday To Remember For the first time in a very long time Hinckley-Finlayson schools will have the Wednesday before thanksgiving off. This is the first occurrence of such a day off since almost all the teachers can remember. Except Mr. Grice, the veteran teacher claims he has had the Wednesday before Thanksgiving day off in his teaching career. In honor of this extremely rare phenomenon, we -at the Jaguar Journal- wanted to know what the teachers and students thought about their additional day off.
The Initial reaction was very positive, almost everyone we interviewed was thrilled at the idea of an extra day off. The extra time to prepare for thanksgiving and spend time with family seemed to be a recurring theme. We asked some students and staff what they would be doing with this extra time. Mrs. Pollock said with her free time she will be getting a haircut and taking Mr. Kreger to a movie. Ninth grader Jada Oquist said, “I’m staying home and get caught up on homework and catch up on sleep.” We asked Mr. Grice what he was going to do with his extra day, given this wasn’t his first time he knew exactly what he was going to do. He said, “I’ll be picking up my two year-old grandson and we will be preparing food getting the house ready for thanksgiving.” Ms. Anderson said, “I am going to spend time with my family and go to a concert in Duluth.” We asked students if they had any family traditions they’d like to share. Eighth grader Ava Anderson said, “My family likes to get together play games and brag about who got the biggest deer.” Brice Mitchell (8th grade) said his family likes to have lutefisk as the main meal. It appears that the people from Hinckley-Finlayson have lots of great things to do with their extra day off. We hope everyone enjoys their extra day, and from everyone at the Jaguar journal, Happy Thanksgiving.

The Hinckley Finlayson jaguar cross country team went the distance this year claiming five all-conference awards. The junior high girls, Madison Jackson, Killeen Prater and Emily Klar, proved that hard work pays off as they took first as a team at the conference meet held in Pine City. In addition, the varsity girls team, consisting of Raechel Painovich, Audrey Storlie, Hallie Rootkie, Sophie Hodena and Ava Anderson, took second. “Most people who join cross country are instantly hooked,” said head coach Tom Linden. This year the cross country team had the most runners since 2004. Audrey Storlie said, “ being on the cross country team was absolutely amazing, I got in shape and made amazing friends." Though the team works hard they focus on making their season enjoyable by playing games and going on adventure runs. When asked for his perspective on why students should consider being a part of the team, coach Linden said, “running is not easy for everyone, but with the right attitude and commitment, our sport can be accomplished by just about anyone.” In the aftermath of a successful season, the Jaguars are looking forward to next year. Coach Linden predicts that the cross country team, who didn't lose a single runner to graduation, will come back even stronger next year. One of the goals the team has set includes winning the girls varsity conference title next season. Coach Linden also hopes to see the varsity boys’ team in the running for a conference title. The entire team hopes to reach new personal bests and have another adventurous season. Lastly, the team is looking forward to hosting their very own home meet at Grand National Golf Course next season. 11/17/2017 0 Comments Football FinaleBy Abby Painovich
The Jaguar Football boys’ season came to an end on Thursday, November 2nd in Esko, with a loss against Braham. The team ended the regular season with 7 wins and only two losses. The team played many well fought games, two of which were decided in overtime. Senior Chayne Dunkley commented that although they started off with little success and an overall rough start, as the season went on they kept putting in the work and they began to win more games. We asked coach Brad Hopkins what the key is to having a successful and coherent team to which he replied, “Football is a game of strategy... one player can not do things alone without the help of his teammates.” The jaguar football team continued to play hard all year and were rewarded with second place in the conference. Looking forward to next season, Coach Hopkins would like to see improvement from this past season and a conference championship. He commented that going to the state tournament is something that they’ve been close to doing three seasons in a row and will eventually happen. Losing 14 seniors, the team will have spots that need to be filled next year. Chayne’s advice to next year's team is, “take advantage of this opportunity as most kids won’t get to play football after high school; this is your one chance. Work hard on the field as well as in the classroom and have a sense of pride in our team and our school.” The team would also like to thank all of the fans for filling the stands and traveling with them to many games and the cheerleaders for supporting jaguar football, getting fans excited, and “having their backs to the bitter end!” They also want to give special thanks to all the parents for allowing their son to be a part of jaguar football and for the dedication and commitment that is given. 11/17/2017 1 Comment Volleyball Season SnapshotWritten by Anders Prater
The Hinckley-Finlayson Varsity volleyball team had a season full of ups and downs, more downs than ups in the win column, but ask anyone and they’ll tell you the team’s (2-22) record did not reflect their effort. Coach Joey Scullard said that despite the losses they didn’t have a single player quit all season. He said the girls stuck with it no matter how tough the season was. We asked graduating senior Amanda Sadler what it was like to play on the team this year and she said, “everyday was unique, you never knew what was going to happen next. It was a fun because everyday was very interesting.” The Jaguars had some ups aswell, including a win against East Central in the first tournament of the season, and a win over the Ogilvie Lions in three games, mid-season. Amid these victories, there were personal achievements as well. Hannah Balut earned all conference honors and Amanda Sadler received an all-conference honorable mention. The team boasted 9 letter winners. The Jags have already started looking forward towards next season. Losing 5 seniors they have many spots to fill, including replacing two starting setters. Coach Scullard says that after the success of this year's JV, he sees more wins coming at the varsity level next year. Amanda’s advice for next year's team was, “never be afraid to try something new and never be afraid to step up.” |
