9/28/2018 0 Comments Seventh Grade Can't Escape!By Kenedy Cessna
HFHS seventh grade Social Studies class had an interesting class on Tuesday. Perhaps you’ve heard of an escape room before? An escape room is a sort of detective game where you find hidden clues in an area while being timed, the goal is to decode the puzzle or in some cases escape the room. New teacher Mrs. Gamst did just that for her fourth and fifth hour students. The object of this Escape Room was to help learn parts of the United States. At first the rules of the game was read, next a video played while the students watched, the video showed how to play, the class had thirty minutes to figure the puzzle out. The Jaguar Journal has some footage of her fourth hours’ adventure.

The Jaguar volleyball team had two games this week. On Tuesday they hosted the Dragons of Pine City. The varsity and Jv lost but an exciting 5th game on the C-team court took home one win. Varsity and Jv both lost in straight sets to a powerful Pine City team. There was lots of improvements to be made before they travelled to Rush City Thursday. C-team won the first set only to lose the next two. They fought back though and won the last two in what Coach K called, “The Big Win”. A shout out to Raven for some awesome blocks. Thursday the team travelled to Rush City. All of the teams played hard but couldn’t take a match from the Tigers. Varsity lost in 3 to a very powerful (and tall) Rush City team. The Jags fought until the end, where the Tigers won the 3rd game 25-22. Although they didn’t come home victorious this team took home something greater. After a drought of not playing as the team we know them as they found themselves again. It’s good to see the team from the beginning of the season back and ready to go into homecoming week. The Jv team stuck with the Dragons for a while but couldn’t keep up towards the end. A good game to watch with all the effort shown by the girls. C-team was loud and positive as always last night despite losing to the Tigers. This group of girls is so fun to watch, their energy is always top notch and they carry it into every game. 9/28/2018 0 Comments The Jaguar Journal Gets a MakeoverBy Anderson Prater

Riverside landing was the destination for the Advanced Phy. Ed. students on Monday, September 24th. The class headed up to Danbury where they would meet Pardun Canoe Rental to begin their journey to the Namekagon River. At the end of the day they would have travelled nine miles down the Namekagon River which then flowed into the St. Croix River. So the group of students grabbed a paddle, hopped in their canoes and began their day of paddling. They began at the Namekagon Trail Landing and made their way down the river. The weather was perfect and the sights were amazing. As described by some of the students, the trees are in the middle of changing colors so the color on the banks of the rivers were full of various greens, oranges, yellow and reds. The river was also moving very fast according to teacher chaperone, Mr. Grimm, who was very surprised at the fact that the group was able to paddle 9 miles down the river in only 2 hours, the fastest he has ever seen. The group, upon arriving at Riverside Landing, started a small fire for them to cook their lunch over. They ate hot dogs, brats, and s'mores. While they waited for their bus to come pick them up they all sat around the fire talking and laughing. After a little over an hour of waiting at the landing, the Pardun Canoe Rental bus arrived, signifying the end of their journey. The group had lots of fun paddling down the Namekagon and St. Croix River, and as one student said, “it definitely beats a day of sitting in desks at school.” By Kenidy Cessna
On Monday the Cross Country team traveled to Pierz to compete in the Pierz Stampede. “The course was a very nice and the day for running was great, not too windy, not too rainy, just the perfect day to run,” says Anders Prater. Congrats to the runners on Varsity and JV who battled their way through and saw times slashed from the last meet. Abby Painovich reached a new personal best taking 1:36 off with a finish of 24:32. Dylan Mans led the boys Varsity team shaving 1:04 off his previous time and also ran his personal best with the time 20:50. Reese Hartl avenged herself from last Tuesday’s third place, winning yet again the two mile JH girls race finishing with 13:01. The Jaguar cross country team is heading to Milaca bright and early tomorrow morning to compete in the Milaca Mega Meet. Come on out and support the team! Below are some pictures captured by head coach, Tom Linden. 9/21/2018 1 Comment About Our Office StaffBy Siarra Kubesh There have been many stories about the new staff at HFHS, and on the first day of school the teachers tell us about themselves. But we haven’t had a chance to get to know the office staff. We decided to do some Q & A with the office staff to get to know them a little better.

The volleyball team took on the Mora mustangs in Mora on Monday. Varsity and Jv both lost but C-team took an exciting win. All the teams worked hard and never gave up. Varsity lost in 3 but very close games made it a fun match to watch. The Jv girls fought hard but were physically out matched. They just couldn’t keep up with the bigger stronger Mora team. C-team lost the first game but came back strong to win the next 3. A special shoutout to Maddie Jackson for her nice hits and serves. The Jaguar volleyball team hosted the Ogilvie Lions the following day. Jv and C-team beat the Lions but the varsity fell in a very close match. Varsity lost the first two sets but came back with energy in the third game. The Jags took the next two games. Into the fifth game we went. It was a back and forth battle but in the end Ogilvie came out on top. Coach Smith’s take on the Jv game, “In what is becoming true JV fashion, the Jaguars dropped a dismal first set to Ogilvie last night at home. They showed a lot of character as they shook off the loss, and with great teamwork, powered through to win the next 2 sets and earn another win on our home court.”. She couldn’t be more right. C-team came out strong and won the first 3 games. They lost the last two games in close sets. Great work by all. The girls are looking to even out the starting starting spirits of each team. As jv and varsity start slow then dig themselves out of a hole and C-team always starts strong and slowly dies off. The next game is on Tuesday the 25th at home. Come support your Jaguar volleyball team! 9/20/2018 0 Comments Football Takes on the WarriorsBy Abby Painovich
The Jaguar Football team came out strong against the Braham Bomber last Friday night but were unable to their offensive push. The team sustained many injuries and fatigue due the hot and heavy air under the friday night lights. They only allowed one touchdown early in the first half but were able to hold them off until halftime, where the score paused at 0-8. The Jags came out vengeful in the start of the second half, forcing a fumble which was later turned over to Bombers. Not long after, Braham extended their lead to 0-20. The jags were not done yet. They fought back, making the score 20-8 but there was not enough time left on the clock to earn back their deficit. The final score was 20-8, but not for a lack effort- Coach Hopkins remarked, “the jaguars played without some key players tonight, but the players that stepped up did a tremendous job! The jaguars played as a team tonight and improved from last game.” Over the past week, the Jaguars have been working their execution of their plays on both offense and defensive. They are feeling more confident tonight as they feel they have “played better each week at certain positions” and tonight they feel it will all come together. They have been working very hard to minimize the amount of their errors on the field and to use their strengths to their full advantage. This is what Coach Hopkins had to say on the topic: “We will need to limit the mistakes and play a full game on both sides of the ball. We played well enough to have a chance last week, this week we have to take care of business and increase that chance!” The Jaguar football team has also seen growth since last friday. They have seen the players’ ability to to step up and play their hearts out. Coach Hopkins commented that “each week this young team is gaining valuable experience and improving.” There is no doubt that the Jaguars’ season has started off slow but Coach Hopkins is proud of the way his boys have played, the way they have improved mentally and the confidence they have achieve throughout the season. Although last week’s game in particular was a tough loss for the Jags, they think tonight’s game will be more even matched with a team similar to their own- having graduated a large senior class and are rebuilding- Deer River will a good test for the Jags. Taking into account all of this, the Jaguar football team will be ready to compete tonight against the Deer River Warriors at 7pm and Berquist Field. Come out and support you Jaguar football team by wearing anything that is Hawaiian to the game as that is tonight’s theme! By: Anderson Prater Science Fair is still a long way down the road for 9th and 10th graders at HFHS (Local Science Fair is taking place on December 10th, 2018) but for some the experiments have already begun. Tenth grader Luke Chapman started testing the water of the Grindstone river this month. Luke is testing for organisms in the Grindstone river, specifically “benthic macroinvertebrates” which are organisms without a backbone and large enough to see with the naked eye. He is trying to find the numbers of these macroinvertebrates at different sites along the Grindstone river to tell if the river has a healthy number of living organisms. Luke’s tests consist of stringing nets at various places along the Grindstone river. Then, upstream from these nets, he disturbs the riverbed by kicking the rocks and mud. This disturbance causes the organisms that were resting on the riverbed or on rocks to become detached and float downstream into the nets. Luke takes the nets out of the water and picks out the organisms and puts the macroinvertebrates into alcohol to identify them and document how many of each species he has collected. In addition to the organisms, Luke has found many Crayfish and Mayflies, which he said is as expected. Luke plans on testing more sites on the river and we at the Jaguar Journal will follow his experiment until it is finished. 9/14/2018 0 Comments Just Run With ItKenidy Cessna
