11/30/2018 0 Comments Madison Lange's Science Fair ProjectBy Anderson Prater
Madison Lange, A tenth grader at Hinckley-Finlayson used her Science Fair Project as a platform to raise money for the HFHS Backpack program. Madison did her experiment on the effectiveness of different types of fundraising. Her question was whether actively sitting next to a donation box or setting out a donation box with no one next to it would generate more donations. Her Hypothesis, actively asking for donations will result more donations received. Madison tested this theory over the course of eight different days, four hours per day for a total of 32 hours of taking donations. 16 of which she actively asked for donations and 16 of which she left out a bucket and a description of what the donations would go to. Madison found that when you actively engage with people and ask them for donations you will receive more donations, proving her hypothesis. Madison managed to reign in $884.09 that will go to the HFHS backpack program. An amazing contribution that will help provide food to many in the district. The experiment is a great way to further science and the Hinckley Finlayson School District. Madison’s project shows that science can be applied to real life, and can have a positive impact when applied correctly. This experiment can be used as an example for younger students who hope to use their science fair project to further their community. Good luck to Madison as she presents her findings at local science fair on December 10th.

11/30/2018 0 Comments What is a One Act?There has been a lot of buzzing around about the one act here at HFHS. So as a reporter I went and tried to figure that out for you. So below we have a little Q”s and A”s between our very own director and band assistant Corilla Clark, and two HFHS students in the one act. Those people are Madelyn Dutcher and Sophia Hopkins.
(Corillas answers below) Q: What is a one act? A: A One Act is simply a show that has only 1 act. Q: How long does it take to write a one act play? A: I have no idea how long it takes to write a One Act because I deal with directing it not writing it. I would imagine it could take years to perfect a script. Q: How many acts are in a play? A: There is only one act in a one act play Q: Do you have any examples for one acts? A: There are millions of One Act Plays out there. They can range between 10 minutes to 60 minutes long Q: What is the one act about? A: We are hopefully doing a play about WWII Q: How many characters are in the one act? A: There are 4 main characters, a mother, father, boy and girl. Sophia’s questions and answers Q: how many years have you done plays? A: 6 years Q: What about one acts? A: 3 years Q: Have you starred in any? If so which ones A: aladdin jr. played as jaffar, Q: What is this one act about? A: not exactly sure Q: Are you in this years 2018 one act? A: yes Q: what is your favorite part about the plays you have been in? A: it’s really short and snappy, also easy to put together, and the technicalities keep me interested. Q: any additional statements you would like to add? A: Suggest joining the drama club, technical and backstages are always needed. (below is Madelyn Dutchers answers) Q: how long have you been doing plays? A: I've been doing play since 2nd grade Q: how long have you been doing one acts? A: I've been doing one act since 7th grade Q: how many plays or one acts have you starred in? If any which ones? 3. I've stared in multiple plays and musical. I've only stared in 1 one act which was last years, 'A thousand cranes.' Q: what is this one act about? A: This one act is set in the village of Lidice, Czechoslovakia and is based on real events. During World War II the Nazis claimed that the citizens of Lidice were harboring an assassin of Reinhard Heydrich who was a Nazi henchman. The Nazis ended up destroying every structure, kill every man they could, put the women in “concentration camps,” and have the children go into “educational institutions.” Q: Are you gonna be in the one act? A: Well, we haven't had tryouts yet but I plan on doing it! Q: what’s your favorite part of plays or drama? A: I love the freedom to express yourself and I like working with the cast, especially in one acts since it's a smaller group of dedicated actors and actresses. 11/30/2018 0 Comments Hallie and Chief Take the GoldBy Kenidy Cessna
Last weekend Hallie Rootkie showed her champion short horned steer Chief in Watertown South Dakota at the Jordan Mack Memorial Show. They took home the gold and placed first in his age group. He was born in April of last year and the dynamic duo plan on attending the Minnesota State Fair this upcoming year. The Jordan Mack Memorial Show was the second time Chief competed, the first time was at the Minnesota Beef Expo. Although Hallie is a very active student in her community and a driven athlete she seems to find time around all that to compete. The way these competitions work is the two walk around in a circle with other cows in their age group and judges choose the cow that looks the best. Congratulations to Hallie and Chief on their accomplishment and goodluck in the upcoming competitions! By Sam Bostrom On November 12th-15th Hinckley-Finlayson High’s forestry class met with the Conservation Corps of Minnesota (CCM) to clean up our school forest removing invasive species. Hinckley-Finlayson High’s (HFHS) school forest coordinator, Katie Klar, the agriculture teacher at HFHS received a grant for the CCM crew to come to Hinckley. They focused on removing invasive species such as Buckthorn and Hickory to help build an outdoor classroom. Katie’s forestry class followed the crew members through the forest as they cut down the species and applied chemicals to prevent further growth. -Pictured above on the left; Hinckley-Finlayson High’s Jill O’Bryan stacking more Hickory preparing it for removal at a later date. To the right; Dayshaun Culsrud, Miss Klar and the Conservation Corps of Minnesota on their way to go grab more remains to throw on the piles.
At the end of those four long days, the students made three huge piles, cleaning approximately ⅓ of the school forest. Katie Klar, the school’s agriculture teacher says, “There’s still a lot more to be done. In the future, the forestry class is going to continue to remove the invasive species from the forest and manage for other tree species.” 11/29/2018 0 Comments Gymnastics BeginsBy Abby Painovich
“So far I've gotten my skills back super easily and no injuries,” says Senior gymnast, Christeva Perrotti who began her season last week. Gymnastics has started up and although they don’t have a meet until January, they will be working hard all throughout December in hopes of starting their season out strong. The RPHF Flamingos are looking to conquer their competitors this season. They will have a strong team with 3 returning varsity all-arounders, Christeva Perrotti, Kianna Helmin and Livia Isackson-Rod, who also double as great role model for the younger athletes. This will be a key factor in their season, they need strong leaders in order to have a strong team. Come meet time, head coach Sam Isackson comments that the “team’s strengths are floor and beam.” She goes on to say that “individually, Christeva Perrotti will also be a strong competitor on bars.” They do plan to just dive right into the season however. They will go into the season with a couple goals in mind. As a team they are working on perfecting their technique and will do so by building off of the gymnasts’ skills from season. Christeva Perrotti also has a goal in mind. She tells us that the team is already super close but she looks forward to bonding with them and just having fun in general. The Flamingos will face some tough competitors later on in their season. For their first meet of the season they will face North Branch which from past years has proven to be a of good competition for the team. Coach Isackson comments on the matter saying, “We are looking forward to competing with North Branch although they are one of the harder teams, the gymnasts know each other.” “To competing some new skills and having a positive season,” is what Coach Isackson replied when we asked what they were looking forward to this season. All things considered, the Flamingos should be very successful this season. They will have a strong group of leaders that are willing to work hard and push themselves as well as their teammates to be their very best. “Having fun and giving it my all; it's my last year,” is what Christeva Perrotti is looking forward to. 11/28/2018 0 Comments Wrestling PreviewBy Kenidy Cessna

The girls JH basketball teams started their season with a bang! Practice for them began on October 29, since then it’s been focus and drive. Coaches Brad Hopkins and Tom Linden with their second year coaching together looks like it’s going to be a successful year for the two teams. The coaches sure did their fair share of the victory’s the jags have had recently. The majority seventh grade girls team has been playing together since they were fifth graders and since, have grown as a team. The eighth graders have had their ups and downs but look like they’ve finally found their way to victory. The 7th grade JH girls basketball team sure had a big kickoff to their season! Their first game was against East Central Eagles at their home court. The jags took lead and ended the game 48-0, they showed no mercy for the eagles. Then last night, November 15, the jags beat the Tigers at Rush City with a score of *** The 8th grade JH girls basketball team went all out and pushed hard their first game against East Central on November 13. The drive and determination the young lady's’ had payed off in the end when they came out on top, with 7th grade winning 48-0 and 8th grade winning 30-12. On Thursday November 15 the jags took on the Rush City Tigers and 8th grade won 24-9. What a great start to their season! 11/16/2018 0 Comments Girls Basketball Begins TonightBy: Anders Prater
The HFHS Girls Varsity will be kicking off their season with a scrimmage against Grantsburg tonight at 4 pm in the big gym. The girls began practice on Monday November 12th and have been prepping to play from that first day of practice. The scrimmage is coming after only four days of practice but Head Coach Keith Linzmeier doesn’t think the lack of practice will inhibit the team, he talked about how they have 11 returning Varsity players and “Experience goes a long ways when it comes to the different things we will see from other teams and how we handle it” The returning lady Jags are coming into the season with some big goals, namely to finish in the top half of the Great River Conference, and getting a home game in the first round of playoffs. The girls have long season ahead of them and some tough competition along the way, including Rush City and Pine City who they will have to see twice in conference play. Coach Linzmeier is well aware of the obstacles they need to surpass this season to reach their goals, and to reach these goals he said they are stressing, “effort, attitude, teamwork” Every day at practice. Tonight when they play Grantsburg, the girls are hoping to use their team quickness and experience to their advantage, something coach Linzmeier said they hope to utilize in every game of the season. More importantly than playoff rankings or conference seeding, Coach Linzmeier is focused on one thing above all this season, “To continue to improve each day.” If the girls can build off of the good basketball they played at the end of the season last year they will be on the road to a successful season. 11/13/2018 0 Comments Boys Basketball- 2 Days to Tip-offBy Abby Painovich
“I am very anxious for the season to start, I know it will be a good season,” says Senior Forward Johnny Kordiak when asked how he feeling going to into the season. That’s right, the boys’ basketball season is beginning next week. Last season, the Jaguars were very successful; they won the conference and section title and on top of that, finished fifth in the state. This year, however, they will be without four of their graduated starters. This means that younger players and this year’s senior will have to step up and fill those roles. They will have 10 returning players to the varsity team, 9 of which are seniors. However, it is noted that many of these players did not get much varsity playing time but Coach Kreft is confident in their abilities and is excited to see what they will do. On this topic, Coach Kreft also comments that “I think a lot of our opponents will think we will be down this year because we graduated so many from last years team… so I'm excited to see us surprise some teams with how well we can play.” The Jaguars have accomplished many things in past season, however, in order to have a winning season they must start small and work their way up. Coach Kreft would like to see a conference and then section title this season. This is something they will strive for in every practice and game. Above all, however, Coach Kreft aims to grow the team’s enjoyment of the game and to “work together as a tight-knit team to achieve as much as they can.” The players of boys basketball team also have goals in mind. Johnny Kordiak says that on behalf of the team, is determined to “beat Pine City.” The team split with the Dragons last year in a fierce battle. Senior Point Guard, Anders Prater also comments that with hard work and tenacity he can see the Jaguars “beating Pine City and take home the conference championship for the third year in a row.” Regardless of the loss of players from last year, Coach Kreft still expects the same amount of strength to be brought to the table. This season, they have a large number of players and of those players, many are able to play many positions. Versatility will be a key part of their success this year. He also comments that their returning guard play from past years will aid in the strength of their team and that a positive attitude and a willingness to work hard and improve will make their season a successful one. “I am looking forward to the games against pine city, I love playing in those close high intensity games especially when there is a big crowd,” says Anders Prater when asked what he is most looking forward to this year. This has been one of the Jaguars’ biggest competition in past years. Every year, the Jaguars look forward to playing them in search for good match and ultimately a win. Another team that Coach Kreft expects to be evenly matched with them is Rush City. As for outside their conference, he expects there to be very good competition such as Cromwell-Wright to name one, who is returning their nearly every player from last year’s line-up. All things considered, the Jaguars will face some tough competition but with hard work each and every day, they will be able to have a successful season. Coach Kreft is eager to seeing what this group of athletes will do and looks forward to a great season with them. We hope to see the stands packed and the fans cheering them on at every game. On October 16, the HFHS Cross Country team ended their regular season. During that time the girls varsity team placed first in conference and Cedric Lafave moved on to state. After the girls celebrated their victory the boys celebrated with second place in conference; the boys season was a fierce competition. The seniors, Abby Painovich, Christeva Perrotti, Johnny Kordiak, Anders Prater, and Dylan Mans ended their season at the Pine City meet on that victorious day. “They bring a level of maturity, leadership, responsibility, and are tremendous role models for our younger runners and anyone in the school. All of them know how to balance being a student and an athlete. All of them know what level of work is required to set the high goals they set for themselves… Overall, this was my favorite season of coaching ever. I felt all of my athletes worked their butts off everyday, set high goals, and worked to achieve them.” says blissful coach Linden. At St. Olaf college Cedric Lafave ran his last meet of the season. Although he had an injury to his arm muscle he ran his heart out and finished with a time of 18:42 and placed 160th overall! Unfortunately he did not advance, but only about two runners that competed in the state meet move onto nationals. This season the team brought everythng they had to each and every meet and practice. There were many things other people noticed but one that stuck out was the drive every single Jaguar team had. They won the first girls' Great River Conference championship in cc history, they won 7 of the 20 all-conference sensations and they sent a runner to state. While the boys GRC champs this year, Pine City, are graduating their fastest runner, the jags are graduating their third. This year the teams had a total of 30 runners, five are graduating, and Linden hopes we can have five or more come out next year. The jags went into the season knowing their chances were very good to win GRC championships for both boys and girls varsity teams . The girls accomplished this feat, coming out on top 33 to 39 against Pine City who took second. The boys did not win the conference meet but they did improve from 4th place last year to 2nd this year. Congratulations also to all those who earned some individual recognition; Cedric Lafave who competed at state, Girls Varsity who took home the GRC champs. Cedric, Anders Prater, Brock Bjerke, Reese Hartl, Raechel Painovich, Ava Anderson, and Sophie Hodena who were all-conference runners. The team is always looking for more runners, come on out next year and run with them! Congratulations on a very successful season for all those who participated and a huge thanks to all their supporters! |
