12/21/2018 0 Comments 'Tis the Season of Holiday Concerts!By Kenidy Cessna Starting at 9 a.m. the lights came on and the Holiday Spirit filled the Hinckley Finlayson High School Auditorium. The Hinckley Elementary School students and staff put on an outstanding show for families and community members. The program is a yearly performance from grades K-6th grade. There is always about two or three programs a year for families of students. At 9:30 a.m. Kindergarten-3rd Grade put on the opening performance and did a wonderful job at that. Later that day at 1:00 4th grade-6th grade closed the day out with confidence and smiles.
Then on Monday at 7:30 the senior high band and choir took place at the Ostrand Fine Arts Center. The performed Betelehemu, I Saw Three Ships, O Holy Night, Winters Waking, and Donanoube Cannon. The senior high musicians and singers put on a very entertaining show and didn’t leave an ounce of Holiday Spirit out! “The altos did a great job harmonizing during the concert, especially ‘O Holy Night’ which was one of our best songs.” says HFHS choir member Brooke Golly.

12/21/2018 0 Comments Santa's WorkshopBy Abby Painovich
Santa came to Hinckley this week? Not quite yet, but his helpers did. In the boardroom of Hinckley Finlayson High School Santa’s helpers went work finding and wrapping gifts for the students. The tables were filled with toys, clothes and other gifts while the room was filled with holiday cheer. The smiles on the students faces as they entered the room grew even larger as the left with arms full of wrapped gifts for the special people in their lives. Santa’s Workshop is an opportunity for students to find gift for anyone around the holiday time at no cost. The items are donated by the staff and community members of Hinckley. Then, students in Minnesota Honor Society volunteer and help other students find and then wrap their presents. Santa’s Workshop is very important to many students at Hinckley Finlayson High School. One student who left with a stack of presents that barely made it through the doorway said, “Thank you guys! I am so thankful for this opportunity, my family are going to love these!” Another who left with one gift bag for their mother said, “I would never have been able to wrap the gifts this good, thank you so much!” It began on Monday and ran until Wednesday. On Monday, the tables were crowded with all sorts of gifts and were even overflowing onto the floor. However, by the time Wednesday rolled around, there were a few empty tables and the wrapping paper supply was dwindling. This year's selection must've been especially good, the best yet. However, success at Santa's Workshop is not measure in numbers, it is measured in the amount of students who leave with smiling faces and glowing hearts. When we asked MHS co-president Dylan Mans what he enjoyed about volunteering at Santa's Workshop he told us, "Learning how to wrap presents again, but also watching the kids be all excited for Christmas." This is what the holidays are all about, seeing smiles on faces and cheer in eyes. Thanks to all the staff and community member who donated items to Santa’s Workshop and thanks to all the MHS member who volunteered their time wrapping presents! See you again next year and Happy Holidays! 12/21/2018 0 Comments Student Spotlight: Cedric's ComebackBy Kenidy Cessna Cedric Lafave is a well known athlete in the Hinckley-Finlayson High School, he’s sure had his ups and downs and has persevered through it all. Towards the end of the Cross Country season Cedric Lafave got an arm injury that held him back when he ran at state. The injury also took away his ability to play the first few weeks of basketball. This injury occurred at a basketball camp when he was elbowed and then fluid clotted in his arm and made it unable to straighten. Recently Cedric had gotten the all clear from the doctor after he was finally able to straighten it and has played two games since. His arm has affected Cedric for a little more than two months. He feared this problem with his arm would take him out for half the season if not more.
Cedric is very successful in the sports he competes in such as Football, Track, Cross Country, and Basketball. He works hard and shows promising signs to coaches that he will put forth effort and has an immense amount of drive. He looks forward to his future with the basketball team and is ready to give it everything he’s got. Given the hand he was dealt Cedric was determined to heal quickly and get back on the court to show what he’s made of, and he’s done just that. 12/19/2018 1 Comment Our Very Own Deb From The KitchenBy Siarra Kubesh
Deb is our head cook here at HFHS. She has been working at hinckley schools for 8 years and worked 7 years as the ala. carte lady at East Central school. Deb is a hard worker who comes in monday thru friday at 4:30am-5am each morning, she starts on the ala. carte breakfast and gets the lunch set up. No later than 9:30 does the lunch ladies start cooking and getting ready for lunch. In this kitchen there are 6 people working there and total of 11 in total for Finlayson and Hinckley together. The lunch ladies do 6 week intervals of the students favorite and affordable lunch dishes, they go through the six weeks then starts all over and add new things as they think of it to the lunch menu, so it’s not the same old same old. Deb was then asked by the reporter, “If you could tell anything to the students of HFHS what would it be?” Deb then said “ If you want a good job then get your food and nutrition classes taken care of, the food industry is growing, and I want to encourage all students to get into food and kitchen industry.” Deb is a greatly appreciated worker and we are very glad to have her here. 12/18/2018 0 Comments Building Project UpdateBy: Anderson Prater
The giant grey walls that have replaced our beloved Fine Arts Center parking lot are beginning to look more and more like a part of each building each day. The old parking lot has become a busy construction site where the new addition to the school will stand next year. Set to open in 2019 the addition will be two levels, the lower level will contain a new gym, a new entrance into the High School along with new High School offices. There will be a new concession stand, two competition-sized locker rooms, a new training room, a new room for the refs to change and shower, and additional storage and custodial areas. On the second level, there will be a new office and rooms for the Community Ed programs, new fitness/weight room area that will include two small locker areas and adjoining bathroom/showers. The second-floor area is also the access to the new elevated walking track that will be suspended over the gym floor on 3 walls. With a project this size, problems are inevitable. We asked Head Custodian Joe Frace what the biggest issue the construction crews have faced so far were, he answered, "Space, There are many tradespeople and materials that go into building anything this size. On a daily basis, there can be up to 30 people going in and out of the construction site along with the large materials such as roof trusses that need to be brought in. " The construction site is constantly buzzing with activity, and if thirty people weren't enough the site is also home to some big machinery. "As of right now, this job site alone has had four different [cranes]" Joe France explained, "The largest one was 175 feet tall and could lift 250 tons. Just finding the space for all these things is challenging and every morning at 7:45 am there is a meeting to plan the day's events so the day will run smooth." Despite the number of people and cranes crammed into such a small space, the project remains on schedule. Joe France told us, "[The construction crews] were planning on working in the winter weather from the get-go. They have heaters currently set up in the lower level so that concrete can be poured next week." The workers will continue despite the cold to keep on track. Currently, the plumbers are finishing laying the main sewer lines so that the main concrete floor can be poured, The new main electrical panels should be in this week and will be installed as soon as they get in. And the main power coming to the school is complete except for the wire has to tunnel bored under the railroad tracks to the east of the school where they will be connected to a new power pole. Finally, the roof over the rest of the new addition will be completed in the next few weeks as soon as the gym air handling unit comes in. The workers have plenty to keep them busy over the next few weeks and we at the Jaguar Journal will keep producing updates as the building gets closer to its grand opening. 12/14/2018 0 Comments Field Trip to the GuthrieBy Samantha Bostrom
On December 12th, the seventh graders at Hinckley-Finlayson high school (HFHS) took a trip to the Guthrie theater to see A Christmas Carol live and in person. The students were accompanied by teachers and parent chaperones on their educational journey. They explored the floors of the Guthrie as well as watched the play A Christmas Carol. Playwriting is a big part of English history and as an English class trip, it was really beneficial for the students to learn about this style of writing and how it is used. Hannah Hartle, a Student at HFHS shares her thoughts on the trip, Q: What was your favorite part about the trip? A: When we got there, we got to look around and I really loved the 9th floor because it had a glass floor you could walk on and see everything below. It was scary, but I really loved the play too. They had really good performers. Q: Do you think that this trip was a good learning experience? A: Yes, I really think that the school should always bring kids there, it was very interesting and exciting. Mrs. Johnson, the shop teacher here at HFHS was one of the chaperones and she had a few things to say: “I thought they did a very nice job performing. It was my first time being there and the kids behaved very well. They were all pretty excited to go. I believe it was a very good experience for them, and during the “scarier” parts of the play some of the students got a little jumpy.” 12/14/2018 0 Comments Wrestling Season UpdateBy Kenidy Cessna The Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Junior High Wrestling teams all started practice last month. Justin Matson and Luke Knudson are the two varsity wrestlers from Hinckley Finlayson. Matson has come very close to overcoming wrestlers who are ranked in state. Luke Knudson has also had very successful season so far.
Justin has set some goals for himself before the season started and is working hard. He has met is first goal which was to start varsity, now he’s on is way to place in state while still only a freshman. Justin competes year round and knows the sport very well therefore it gives him an advantage over other teammates and competitors. Luke Knudson has wrestled on varsity before and has a great amount of knowledge on his competition. Knudson has set a goal to be in the 20 win club. By Kenidy Cessna On December 10 the HFHS freshman and sophmores participated in the Science Fair. Many students moved on to Regionals which will take place on February 9 in Duluth. Everyone had a little over three months to take care of their experiments, boards, and papers. All participants had put a lot of work into their projects and had the opportunity to show them off at open house on Monday night.
Raechel Painovich placed first in Biology and Environmental Science, she will be moving onto Regionals. She tested “Does Shoreline Disturbance Impact Fish Habitat?”. Painovich showed the fourth grade class at the elementary her project board and explained her project, the fourth graders are learning their scientific method.Painovich plans on attending Regionals with the same presentation and board that she showed on Monday. She is already thinking of her next project for when she is a sophomore. 12/14/2018 0 Comments The Last Blood Drive of 2018With Christmas just around the corner the community of Hinckley is getting into the spirit of giving. Last wednesday they did just that, giving 61 units of blood during the final blood drive of the calendar year at HFHS. HFHS traditionally brings in very high donation numbers for a school our size and the blood drive coordinators did that again this time around even during flu season.
We asked Blood Drive coordinator Haley Risley what she thought made this blood drive a success and she told us, “There was a great showing from the community, and there were lots of people who were willing to walk in for people who were deferred.” She talked about how it was especially exciting because the coordinators managed to fill tons of slots with first time donors and walk ins, “even during flu season”, Haley ended our interview with some words of advice for people who have never donated before saying, “It is not as bad as it seems, there are worse things out there in the world and by donating you could potentially save three lives.” 12/14/2018 0 Comments Science Fair RecapBy Abby Painovich This past Monday, December 10th, Hinckley Finlayson High School held a science fair competition.
