2/26/2020 0 Comments Girls Hockey All Star GameLast Tuesday 2/25 a sophomore by the name of Raechel Painovich got chosen to participate in the K1 girls of the north All Star game. This is a great honor because only the top 40 girls in northern Minnesota compete at this game. The game was at Northwoods arena in Cloquet and the game began at 5:00. This game is of extreme importance to many girls who want to play college hockey as many scouts attend this game. Raechel played on this team last year as a 9th grader and has been selected for the second time. Raechel’s team, the Fire faced off against the opposing team the Tempest, after the first period the game was at high intensity and was tied 1-1. Both teams were even and the style of play was a lot faster than a regular high school game. With both teams giving all their effort the game ended in a 2-2 tie. Which meant that overtime was to begin next. It was 5-5 on for five minutes and then if no one scored it was to be 4 on 4 for five minutes and then 3 on 3. But unfortunately the game ended shortly into the 1st overtime and one of the players on the Tempest team skated right around the Fire’s defense and deeked the goalie to win the game. One of Raechel’s teammates played on the other team and was very competitive with Raechel making it a very fun game. Raechel says that this event is always a fun experience because she gets to meet new teammates and gets college scouts to watch her play. Raechel hopes to play in this game again next year as a junior and later on play college hockey.

2/25/2020 0 Comments Catfishing Don't Take The Bait!Fortnite players, Call Of Duty nerds, and other video game geeks beware: multiplayer games are being infiltrated by sexual predators. According to Bowles and Keller’s article, “Gamers Beware,” Catfishers prey on minors by getting them to send vulgar images and videos of themselves. Then they blackmail users with the photos they were sent to do various things including illegal actions. As a video game lover, this is truly horrifying to hear. I participate in a variety of multiplayer games, and I chat with a bunch of people. Knowing that there's a possibility that they could be a sexual predator is scary.
The article explains many different actions a person can take to protect themselves against catfishing. If you plan on playing a multiplayer game make sure the people you are playing with are people well known to you or a trustworthy friend of yours. Never give or accept personal information from random people. Another way to keep yourself safe from scammers and predators is by not posting any pictures of yourself where anybody and everybody has access to them. Don't just protect yourself, help protect others through reporting and informing of suspicious activity that you may come across. The Varsity Moose Lake Area Rebels hockey team ended their season last Tuesday in triple overtime at Hibbing Memorial Arena. The Rebels put up a good fight, being the so-called underdogs going into this game because they had lost to the Hibbing-Chisholm Bluejackets twice in the regular season. The Rebels came out strong but got scored on about half way through the first period. Moose Lake gave up a breakaway on their power play so Hibbing capitalized and scored a short-handed goal. After the first period, the score was 1-0 and the shots were 14-6. The rebels hit the ice running in the second period and Raechel Painovich a sophomore on the team scored her 10th goal of the season to tie it up. The second period was fairly even with the shots being 11-6. The game was getting very intense with both teams laying everything on the line because the season's end was at risk. Moose Lake came out firing in the third determined to win but gave up a goal 5 minutes in. The Rebels started to get nervous but still confident they could put another puck in the net. And that they did, a 7th grader Sandra Ribich scored a goal to tie it up 2-2, the momentum was with the Rebels but unfortunately, they could not score a goal to win so they went into their first overtime. The 1st overtime was 8 minutes, both teams had many chances but remained scoreless. The Zamboni resurfaced after the first overtime, as the Rebels would go out for a 17 minute overtime after. Both teams were desperate to get a win but the legs were starting to get tired and they were running on pure adrenaline. The 17 minutes went by very fast but still, both teams were unable to score a goal. They were now into the 3rd overtime which was going to be 8 minutes. Chris Gamst the head coach was interviewed between the overtimes, he said,'' I believe in this hard-working team that we can beat Hibbing if we give it everything we have got. I am not worried at this point in the game, it is stressful on the bench but we are always having a good time.” The rebels had another 8 minute overtime, their first line started the overtime, the uproar of the crowd was infuriating, so much happening in a short amount of time. And then it was all over in the blink of an eye, the Hibbing Bluejackets’ number 25 had scored from the top of the circles and hit the left post and in. It was all over for the Rebels. It was a very hard-fought game and it is sad to say the season was over but we had a great season. The Rebels ended their season with a record of 12-13. The season was one to remember for all of the players, but the many young players look forward to their future years playing with the Rebels. Julia Matson and Raechel Painovich are the only players from Hinckley that play girls hockey. When asked what our favorite part about the season was, Julia responded,” I love the team, this was the most fun I have had in a sport.” Raechel answered similarly with,” This year was one to remember, the seniors will be greatly missed, but I am looking forward to next year with a fun group of girls.” As the season comes to a close the team realizes the abundance of fun they had and the memories made. Congratulations on a great season. 2/11/2020 0 Comments Acquitted,Most of us have heard the issue on Donald Trump’s impeachment. The Democratic side of this debate says that Trump's phone call to Ukraine was a complete abuse of powers. The Republican argument is that what he did was wrong but it is not impeachable. The country was in a state of political drama and we were are all waiting for the outcome of these pressing issues.
The Senate has voted to acquit our President, Donald Trump, on the issue of impeachment, last Wednesday. The impeachment trial was very tense, as Mitt Romney became the first Senator to vote to remove from office a president from the same party. The fight for and against impeachment was a hard four-month process. This was a hard fought battle, but is only the beginning of the upcoming campaign for presidency. |
