4/30/2020 0 Comments Abby's FairiesBy Kenidy Cessna Inspired by Abigail Cessna Long ago a little girl named Abby built a blanket fort in her closet. With her busy schedule, she forgot about the fort being there. One night after she got home from a day full of activities she fell asleep and then woke up. There was a noise coming from her closet that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. Nothing more happened so she fell back asleep for a few hours but the noise came back. That was the point where she was getting out of bed to see what was going on. She opened the closet door and saw nothing but darkness so she was confused and just assumed that something fell from the shelf but then she heard a squeak. It came from the fort so she decided to go in there thinking it was just a normal place until. There was a shining light with one tunnel Abby's curiosity got the better of her so she walked in. As she walked in, she stepped on something and she looked down and screamed. It was a fairy! She finished screaming and helped her up, The ferry introduced herself after that the ferry let Abby through something unbelievable. The fairy walked her to her village and all of her friends who are fairies now became Abby’s friends. For days Abby went back to visit her new friends, the only catch to the secret fairy world was that she had to keep it a secret from everyone else. To this day Abby goes into her fort every night and keeps her discoveries a secret from the world. The Jaguar Journal is starting a new series to get Elementary families more involved. By: Raechel Painovich After just finding out that all schools in MN are going to be online for the rest of the year, what has HFHS been doing with all of this time? Many clubs and extra cirriculars are trying to reach out to the community to get them involved and interacting through online media. Clubs such as CCA, Positive Jags, Journalism have been posting activities via Facebook and other social media apps to keep you in the loop and busy.
More specifically, as it was just the 50th anniversary of Earth day, CCA wants to see what you were doing to help save the planet last wednesday. They would greatly appreciate you sending any videos or pictures of you and your family and friends. In addition, Positive Jags sent out a outdoor nature scavenger hunt on facebook and the winner will be feautured on the school’s facebook page. The staff have also been busy sending out meals to students and gathering homework to return to teachers. They ask that students continue to check their e-mail regularily and look at the facebook where they post videos for both elementary and high school students to listen to. I know this can be a very difficult time for many familes but our school is here to help and keep the rest of the school year going well. If you have any questions or concerns direct your call to our staff at HES, HFHS or FES. We are going to get through this together and help eachother out through the process. 4/30/2020 0 Comments How to get Motivated!By: Killeen Prater Week 5 of distance learning. Lots of people are running into a wall when it comes to motivation and creativity. Motivation is so tricky. Sometimes it comes so easily we get so excited and other times it is so difficult to become motivated we get pushed into a death spiral of procrastination. In the rest of this article I wanted to share some tips and research on motivation because I know we can all use it in a time like this.
Motivation: What is it and how does it work? Scientists define motivation as your general willingness to do something. This is a great basic description but I define motivation in a simple phrase; At some point the pain of not doing a task becomes greater than the pain of doing the task. Every choice has a price, but when we are motivated it is easier to bear the inconvenience of the task. Sometimes we will dwell on an idea until procrationation becomes too painful. How to get motivated: Many times we find ourselves wasting too much energy on the wrong part of the process. Wake up thinking “I will be motivated today”.Many times motivation comes with a schedule. If you plan doing your school work or working out at specific times of the day chances are by the time you get to those times you will be mentally prepared to do those tasks. I know it is difficult to make ourselves do something we don't necessarily want to but it will be better in the long run. So do your homework. Go on that run.It will be worth it. 4/24/2020 0 Comments Truthful Words in Tough TimesBy Killeen Prater *I know everyone has heard enough about the COVID-19 virus and being quarantined but I think it is extremely important that when we are hearing things about the virus we are fact checking. We are spending so much time on social media now that we are cooped up inside our houses that it becomes extremely easy to be given fake news. This is a great time to learn skills to help figure out what is true and what isn't.
“Humans are the virus” People have been seeing this trend all over facebook, twitter, instagram and even snapchat. People have been using this term to show that the earth is having time to heal because we are not traveling and polluting as much while in quarantine. It may be very true that groups of people are causing our earth to deteriorate but it is not true that humans as a species have done this to the earth. Capitalism is the virus. There are many nationalities all around the world that have found ways to interact with our earth in very peaceful and non destructive ways. When we use the term human we are grouping those nationalities as part of the problem which is not the case. Putting partial blame on these groups of people is essentially erasing part of that culture's history. Keeping our words truthful even if it is minor details is important in a time of mass confusion. By Raechel Painovich Anyone else really missing their spring sport? Well I am. With the global pandemic currently happening, we have potentially lost the ability to play spring sports this year. I know myself, as well as many others students, are really missing their spring sports and as a 10th grader I really miss hanging out with my teamates and being able to practice with them everyday. I can’t imagine being a senior during this time.
It just doesn’t seem fair. I know we need to take precautions to combat Covid-19, but that doesn’t change the fact that we are without our favorite sports and people during these times. On a lighter note, if you really think about, on the softball field we are outside, all 9 positions are 6 feet apart plus we are all wearing gloves and masks! In reality however, all I, as I’m sure many others as well, want is for my team to be back together and practicing. But in order to level the curve in expontential growth of the corona virus cases in MN, it is best for all of us to stay home and stay in touch. With all of this spare time on our hands, what are we to do with it? I have been trying to go to the field as often as possible to keep up on my skills and keep enjoying the sport even without my teamates. I have also been occsionally running and working out to keep myself busy. But in the end I am just trying to cope with the feeling that I might not play softball this year. I really hope that we are able to get back on the field this year and do what we all love as a team. As I’m sure many of my peers are feeling the same way, it is crucial for us as students and student-athletes to stay home in hopes of retruning to the field soon. In the meantime, head out to the backyard and practice your swing, jumps or just enjoy the outdoors. There are many things to do in Hinckley that allow for the mandated six-feet apart instructions. Right off of I-35 is Banning State Park, a beautiful location to get some air and hike around and in Minnesota we might as well get out and take advantage of the land of 10,000 lakes. Or just stay home and relax, but whatever it is you are doing, stay conscious of the rapid spread of Covid-19, stay safe and enjoy yourself! However Rube Goldberg was a man who is known for creating complex machines to create a simple outcome. Such as, building a catapult, that throws a marble down a tube and each time it hits a new level a line of dominos fall. Somehow all of these separate steps would build to creating one simple outcome such as pouring a glass of water or cracking an egg. Rube Goldberg’s granddaughter has given an international challenge to do during quarantine. The challenge is open to all ages from all over the world and the goal of the competition is to create the most unique way to drop a bar of soap into your hand. All videos of separate individuals’ machines Should be uploaded to YouTube and sent to the link below! May 31st is the deadline and they will be choosing three winners from around the world to receive a feature on the official Rube Goldberg website and a free “swag bag.” Go great your machine!

I just saw my mom and my older sister as I passed them on the way to the bathroom and my dad as he was paying for gas. I know the car was parked right out front when I went in. Is this some kind of a joke? I thought to myself. But I came to the realization that it wasn’t. They had really left me here. How did none of my siblings notice I was gone? As I sat on the curb, waiting for them to remember me, I was flooded with memories of the trip we'd just been on. I mean, yeah... I was mad. They LEFT me at the gas station. But until this moment it had been the best trip of my life. Well, except for that one day with the mountain goat. That was one of the scariest moments of my life.
The adventure began one really early morning, my family of 6 piled into the car and started the 700 mile drive to the Black Hills. It was way to early for me so I slept most of the car ride there with my blanket snuggled closely to me. I woke up hours later to the sound of my sister’s voice shouting, “Raechel! Raechel! Raechel! Look out the window!” I slowly began to rise from my seat and peered out the window. She was pointing to a rock sculpture that looked like a needle. Moments later my mom leaned over her shoulder and told us that we were going to go hike there tomorrow. I could not have been more thrilled, I was so excited. The rock sculpture began to fade as we drove further and further from it. I dozed back to sleep until we arrived at our campsite. We went to sleep for the night in our camper and dreamed about the fun filled hike we were going on tomorrow. That morning I woke to the orange glow of the South Dakota sun shining vibrantly through the camper window. I hopped out of bed and got my hiking gear on and then we drove up the mountain side to go see the rock that was shaped like a needle. The needle rock was really really tall and fascinating but not as cool as the mountain goats that were hopping around on top of the nearby rocks. We drove further up the mountain and that was when I had my first encounter with the mountain goats. We all piled out of the car and got lost in big rock formations. My older sister and I walked around for a while until we found a narrow path, so we squeezed through the rock sideways to find on the other side a mama goat and it’s baby lying on a nearby rock. Immediately I pulled out my blue IPod to take a picture, as soon as I put my hand in my pocket and started to slide it out, it fell from my hands and landed right next to the two goats. Now I was thinking, how am I supposed to get my phone back? I looked at my sister with puppy dog eyes and she rolls her eyes back at me. She slowly drops to her hands and knees and starts crawling towards my phone. I am scared so scared for her. What if she gets too close to the goats? As all of these thoughts appear in my head she is reaching her arm out and carefully picks up the phone and hands it back to me. Why was that so easy for her? I was in disbelief but I was so thankful she was able to get my phone without disturbing the goats. For the rest of the day I kept my phone in my zipped pocket. But that was not even close to the scariest thing that happened to me. Later that same day, I found my brother wandering between some large rocks and I asked him,”Do you know where the rest of our family is?” He shook his head no so we walked back through the narrow opening in the rocks and there stood a huge crowd of people staring above us. I made eye contact with my dad who was standing among the crowd and he was pointing above us mouthing the words “look up.” So I did just that and looked up, standing above us were 3 goats jumping from rock to rock over our heads. I looked at my brother and he looked back at me and we both had the same idea. We cautiously turned around and headed back behind the rocks. Not more than a few seconds later my brother’s brooding eyes were staring right over my left shoulder. I hesitated to look and then slowly turn my head as if I was an owl looking for prey, and about 30 feet behind me was the thundering sound of a mountain goat galloping down the side of an enormous metamorphic rock coming towards us at top speed. I let out this awful uneasy noise - it was supposed to be a scream but sounded much worse. Immediately I made a plan and lifted my arm to point towards a path between two gigantic rocks, my brother began to sprint and I followed him grazing his heels every step. Our legs were striding out as far as they could stretch and our adrenaline was through the roof. The thudding of the mountain goats' steps were coming closer and closer and I was becoming more scared every second. We were jumping over big rocks and ducking under fallen trees to avoid the mountain goat but still it was chasing us. Everything was happening in mere seconds, but time slowed for a minute and my mind was filled with thoughts and questions that couldn’t be answered. What if I trip and fall? Will my family even notice we’re gone? How much longer do we have to run? My legs were getting very tired and I was starting to slow down, I looked behind me to see if the goat was still there and its face was almost touching mine, so I let out another shrill scream and ran faster again. My IPod was bouncing up and down in my pocket making it harder to run. We were turning left and right trying to outrun this mountain goat but it was impossible. It felt like we had been running for hours. My legs were completely numb at this point. I decided to take another glance back slowly turning my head and there was no mountain goat. Where did it go? I kept running just in case it was just hiding but eventually we slowed to a stop. Phew what a relief we had just outrun a mountain goat! My emotions had completely changed. I was in shock. But it didn’t end there, there was another problem, where were we? We had run so far we were now lost in the big rocks and couldn’t see anyone in the distance. Honk! I was in such a deep reverie I had almost forgotten I was sitting on the curb where my family left me behind. The black minivan was pulling in around the corner. I slowly stood with an angry look upon my face as the sliding door of the van began to open. As soon as I lifted my leg to step up into the van I was hit with 5 different looks from my family members. I immediately hopped in the back ignoring all of them. I sat squished between my dad who was trying to hug me and my older sister who was staring out the window in embarrassment for the rest of the car ride home. Although I had been through one of the most emotionally-filled family vacations, I would forever remember that with great adventure comes great risk. 4/17/2020 2 Comments The CarBy: Edward Roubinek A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and asked his mom if he could start using the family car. The mom said she’d make a deal with her son, “You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a little and get your hair cut. Then we’ll talk about the car.”
The boy thought about that for a moment, and they agreed on it. A couple weeks later, the mom said, “Son, you’ve brought your grades up and I’ve observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I’m disappointed you haven’t had your hair cut.” The boy said, “You know, mom, I’ve been thinking about that, and I’ve noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, and there’s even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair.” His mom replied, “Did you also notice that they all walked everywhere they went?” 4/9/2020 0 Comments The Ghost in the GraveyardWritten by: Edward Roubinek
Two men were walking home after Halloween party and decided to take a shortcut to the cemetery just for laughs. Right in the middle of the cemetery, they were startled by a tap tap tapping noise coming from the misty shadows. Trembling with fear, they found an old man with a hammer, chipping away at one of the old gravestones. “Holy cow, man,” One of them said after catching his breath, “you scared half to death. We thought you were a ghost! What are you doing out here so late at night?” “These fools!“ The old man grumbled. “They misspelled my name!“ |
