According to Bowles and Keller’s article, “Gamers Beware,” Catfishers prey on minors by getting them to send vulgar images and videos of themselves. Then they blackmail users with the photos they were sent to do various things including illegal actions. As a video game lover, this is truly horrifying to hear. I participate in a variety of multiplayer games, and I chat with a bunch of people. Knowing that there's a possibility that they could be a sexual predator is scary.
The article explains many different actions a person can take to protect themselves against catfishing. If you plan on playing a multiplayer game make sure the people you are playing with are people well known to you or a trustworthy friend of yours. Never give or accept personal information from random people. Another way to keep yourself safe from scammers and predators is by not posting any pictures of yourself where anybody and everybody has access to them. Don't just protect yourself, help protect others through reporting and informing of suspicious activity that you may come across.
