4/17/2020 2 Comments The Wild Goat that Chased UsBy: Raechel Painovich Where did the car go? I just saw my mom and my older sister as I passed them on the way to the bathroom and my dad as he was paying for gas. I know the car was parked right out front when I went in. Is this some kind of a joke? I thought to myself. But I came to the realization that it wasn’t. They had really left me here. How did none of my siblings notice I was gone? As I sat on the curb, waiting for them to remember me, I was flooded with memories of the trip we'd just been on. I mean, yeah... I was mad. They LEFT me at the gas station. But until this moment it had been the best trip of my life. Well, except for that one day with the mountain goat. That was one of the scariest moments of my life.
The adventure began one really early morning, my family of 6 piled into the car and started the 700 mile drive to the Black Hills. It was way to early for me so I slept most of the car ride there with my blanket snuggled closely to me. I woke up hours later to the sound of my sister’s voice shouting, “Raechel! Raechel! Raechel! Look out the window!” I slowly began to rise from my seat and peered out the window. She was pointing to a rock sculpture that looked like a needle. Moments later my mom leaned over her shoulder and told us that we were going to go hike there tomorrow. I could not have been more thrilled, I was so excited. The rock sculpture began to fade as we drove further and further from it. I dozed back to sleep until we arrived at our campsite. We went to sleep for the night in our camper and dreamed about the fun filled hike we were going on tomorrow. That morning I woke to the orange glow of the South Dakota sun shining vibrantly through the camper window. I hopped out of bed and got my hiking gear on and then we drove up the mountain side to go see the rock that was shaped like a needle. The needle rock was really really tall and fascinating but not as cool as the mountain goats that were hopping around on top of the nearby rocks. We drove further up the mountain and that was when I had my first encounter with the mountain goats. We all piled out of the car and got lost in big rock formations. My older sister and I walked around for a while until we found a narrow path, so we squeezed through the rock sideways to find on the other side a mama goat and it’s baby lying on a nearby rock. Immediately I pulled out my blue IPod to take a picture, as soon as I put my hand in my pocket and started to slide it out, it fell from my hands and landed right next to the two goats. Now I was thinking, how am I supposed to get my phone back? I looked at my sister with puppy dog eyes and she rolls her eyes back at me. She slowly drops to her hands and knees and starts crawling towards my phone. I am scared so scared for her. What if she gets too close to the goats? As all of these thoughts appear in my head she is reaching her arm out and carefully picks up the phone and hands it back to me. Why was that so easy for her? I was in disbelief but I was so thankful she was able to get my phone without disturbing the goats. For the rest of the day I kept my phone in my zipped pocket. But that was not even close to the scariest thing that happened to me. Later that same day, I found my brother wandering between some large rocks and I asked him,”Do you know where the rest of our family is?” He shook his head no so we walked back through the narrow opening in the rocks and there stood a huge crowd of people staring above us. I made eye contact with my dad who was standing among the crowd and he was pointing above us mouthing the words “look up.” So I did just that and looked up, standing above us were 3 goats jumping from rock to rock over our heads. I looked at my brother and he looked back at me and we both had the same idea. We cautiously turned around and headed back behind the rocks. Not more than a few seconds later my brother’s brooding eyes were staring right over my left shoulder. I hesitated to look and then slowly turn my head as if I was an owl looking for prey, and about 30 feet behind me was the thundering sound of a mountain goat galloping down the side of an enormous metamorphic rock coming towards us at top speed. I let out this awful uneasy noise - it was supposed to be a scream but sounded much worse. Immediately I made a plan and lifted my arm to point towards a path between two gigantic rocks, my brother began to sprint and I followed him grazing his heels every step. Our legs were striding out as far as they could stretch and our adrenaline was through the roof. The thudding of the mountain goats' steps were coming closer and closer and I was becoming more scared every second. We were jumping over big rocks and ducking under fallen trees to avoid the mountain goat but still it was chasing us. Everything was happening in mere seconds, but time slowed for a minute and my mind was filled with thoughts and questions that couldn’t be answered. What if I trip and fall? Will my family even notice we’re gone? How much longer do we have to run? My legs were getting very tired and I was starting to slow down, I looked behind me to see if the goat was still there and its face was almost touching mine, so I let out another shrill scream and ran faster again. My IPod was bouncing up and down in my pocket making it harder to run. We were turning left and right trying to outrun this mountain goat but it was impossible. It felt like we had been running for hours. My legs were completely numb at this point. I decided to take another glance back slowly turning my head and there was no mountain goat. Where did it go? I kept running just in case it was just hiding but eventually we slowed to a stop. Phew what a relief we had just outrun a mountain goat! My emotions had completely changed. I was in shock. But it didn’t end there, there was another problem, where were we? We had run so far we were now lost in the big rocks and couldn’t see anyone in the distance. Honk! I was in such a deep reverie I had almost forgotten I was sitting on the curb where my family left me behind. The black minivan was pulling in around the corner. I slowly stood with an angry look upon my face as the sliding door of the van began to open. As soon as I lifted my leg to step up into the van I was hit with 5 different looks from my family members. I immediately hopped in the back ignoring all of them. I sat squished between my dad who was trying to hug me and my older sister who was staring out the window in embarrassment for the rest of the car ride home. Although I had been through one of the most emotionally-filled family vacations, I would forever remember that with great adventure comes great risk.

4/17/2020 2 Comments The CarBy: Edward Roubinek A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and asked his mom if he could start using the family car. The mom said she’d make a deal with her son, “You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a little and get your hair cut. Then we’ll talk about the car.”
The boy thought about that for a moment, and they agreed on it. A couple weeks later, the mom said, “Son, you’ve brought your grades up and I’ve observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I’m disappointed you haven’t had your hair cut.” The boy said, “You know, mom, I’ve been thinking about that, and I’ve noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, and there’s even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair.” His mom replied, “Did you also notice that they all walked everywhere they went?” 4/9/2020 0 Comments The Ghost in the GraveyardWritten by: Edward Roubinek
Two men were walking home after Halloween party and decided to take a shortcut to the cemetery just for laughs. Right in the middle of the cemetery, they were startled by a tap tap tapping noise coming from the misty shadows. Trembling with fear, they found an old man with a hammer, chipping away at one of the old gravestones. “Holy cow, man,” One of them said after catching his breath, “you scared half to death. We thought you were a ghost! What are you doing out here so late at night?” “These fools!“ The old man grumbled. “They misspelled my name!“ 4/9/2020 1 Comment School Away from SchoolWritten by: Kenidy Cessna
I’m sure you’ve all heard by now about COVID-19. It’s a worldwide spread virus that is highly contagious. It has affected nearly every school in the world and even our own Hinckley-Finlayson high school. Teachers, our superintendent, principles, and many others are working to make our education continue even at home while schools are out. Through apps like Schoology, StudentVUE, Gmail, Google class and many others, teachers are assigning work and keeping their students updated. Mr. Masterson and staff have done a great job of keeping students and their families updated on the latest with distance learning. The last message from Masterson let everyone know that quarter 3 grades were submitted Monday and incomplete assignments are due by the end of the day today (4/9). Report cards for quarter 3 will nor be printed but instead, they will be posted via StudentVue/ParentVue by the end of the day Monday, April 13th. If a paper copy is needed contact the office and they can figure out an arrangement for you. A few things about distance learning directly from our principal:
4/7/2020 1 Comment The Positives to a PandemicWritten by: Killeen Prater
It can be hard to imagine a silver lining to the all-consuming cloud that is the current and ongoing spread that is the COVID-19 across the planet. As cities and lives are pulled to a standstill rivers and skies are revealing an unexpected positive to the pandemic. While the beneficial effects to our environment by no means reduce the stress and suffering placed upon people and countries during an outbreak. Economic slowdown and majorly reduced travel as a result of government enforced shelters in place has put a cap on ongoing pollution, we are seeing positive effects all over the world. The first example was seen at the point of origin of COVID-19 in China, where the outbreak began in December, as quarantines across the country took vehicles from the roads. In Wuhan, many locals under lockdown praised the return of blue skies to the usually smog-covered city. NASA has captured many satellite images that show a sustained decrease in nitrogen dioxide. The outbreak has even had an impact on Italy's waterways, which have become crystal-clear due to loss of tourism. Without visitors and greatly-reduced traffic from boats and cruise ships due to Italy's quarantine laws mean fish can now be seen swimming in the clear canals. Stanford University scientist and Earth Systems Professor Marshall Burke has used the emissions data for China to calculate what effect reduced pollution could have on the health of local residents, and found that the impacts of COVID-19 on our environment could potentially save more lives than it kills. Professor Burke's calculations found that the reductions in harmful emissions could potentially contribute to saving the lives of 77,000 Chinese residents. He also states that it would be “incorrect and foolhardy” to imply that pandemics are good for health, as any benefits to air pollution changes don’t account for the negative effects both in the short- and long-term of social and economic disruption that could “exceed any health benefits from reduced air pollution.” Stay home and stay safe, but remember that even in the worst of times there is always a positive outlook. http://www.g-feed.com/2020/03/covid-19-reduces-economic-activity.html 3/6/2020 0 Comments Looking Towards College SportsBy: Edward Roubinek Should college sport participants be compensated. If college athletes got paid for sports in college, when they get recruited they're going to look for the best contracts, This will make it hard for professional recruiting because all the recruits will be looking for the best deal possible, forcing the recruiters to choose the cheapest ones so they don't have to pay as much because they're stingy. A big incentive would not only be more money but the fact that they could advertise. They could be sponsored by different companies, and make money off of their name. They could also invest their money in whatever they want. As a senior I would love to be able to think that I could get paid for sports next year, but the real question is how would affect our academics?
2/26/2020 0 Comments Girls Hockey All Star GameLast Tuesday 2/25 a sophomore by the name of Raechel Painovich got chosen to participate in the K1 girls of the north All Star game. This is a great honor because only the top 40 girls in northern Minnesota compete at this game. The game was at Northwoods arena in Cloquet and the game began at 5:00. This game is of extreme importance to many girls who want to play college hockey as many scouts attend this game. Raechel played on this team last year as a 9th grader and has been selected for the second time. Raechel’s team, the Fire faced off against the opposing team the Tempest, after the first period the game was at high intensity and was tied 1-1. Both teams were even and the style of play was a lot faster than a regular high school game. With both teams giving all their effort the game ended in a 2-2 tie. Which meant that overtime was to begin next. It was 5-5 on for five minutes and then if no one scored it was to be 4 on 4 for five minutes and then 3 on 3. But unfortunately the game ended shortly into the 1st overtime and one of the players on the Tempest team skated right around the Fire’s defense and deeked the goalie to win the game. One of Raechel’s teammates played on the other team and was very competitive with Raechel making it a very fun game. Raechel says that this event is always a fun experience because she gets to meet new teammates and gets college scouts to watch her play. Raechel hopes to play in this game again next year as a junior and later on play college hockey.
2/25/2020 0 Comments Catfishing Don't Take The Bait!Fortnite players, Call Of Duty nerds, and other video game geeks beware: multiplayer games are being infiltrated by sexual predators. According to Bowles and Keller’s article, “Gamers Beware,” Catfishers prey on minors by getting them to send vulgar images and videos of themselves. Then they blackmail users with the photos they were sent to do various things including illegal actions. As a video game lover, this is truly horrifying to hear. I participate in a variety of multiplayer games, and I chat with a bunch of people. Knowing that there's a possibility that they could be a sexual predator is scary.
The article explains many different actions a person can take to protect themselves against catfishing. If you plan on playing a multiplayer game make sure the people you are playing with are people well known to you or a trustworthy friend of yours. Never give or accept personal information from random people. Another way to keep yourself safe from scammers and predators is by not posting any pictures of yourself where anybody and everybody has access to them. Don't just protect yourself, help protect others through reporting and informing of suspicious activity that you may come across. The Varsity Moose Lake Area Rebels hockey team ended their season last Tuesday in triple overtime at Hibbing Memorial Arena. The Rebels put up a good fight, being the so-called underdogs going into this game because they had lost to the Hibbing-Chisholm Bluejackets twice in the regular season. The Rebels came out strong but got scored on about half way through the first period. Moose Lake gave up a breakaway on their power play so Hibbing capitalized and scored a short-handed goal. After the first period, the score was 1-0 and the shots were 14-6. The rebels hit the ice running in the second period and Raechel Painovich a sophomore on the team scored her 10th goal of the season to tie it up. The second period was fairly even with the shots being 11-6. The game was getting very intense with both teams laying everything on the line because the season's end was at risk. Moose Lake came out firing in the third determined to win but gave up a goal 5 minutes in. The Rebels started to get nervous but still confident they could put another puck in the net. And that they did, a 7th grader Sandra Ribich scored a goal to tie it up 2-2, the momentum was with the Rebels but unfortunately, they could not score a goal to win so they went into their first overtime. The 1st overtime was 8 minutes, both teams had many chances but remained scoreless. The Zamboni resurfaced after the first overtime, as the Rebels would go out for a 17 minute overtime after. Both teams were desperate to get a win but the legs were starting to get tired and they were running on pure adrenaline. The 17 minutes went by very fast but still, both teams were unable to score a goal. They were now into the 3rd overtime which was going to be 8 minutes. Chris Gamst the head coach was interviewed between the overtimes, he said,'' I believe in this hard-working team that we can beat Hibbing if we give it everything we have got. I am not worried at this point in the game, it is stressful on the bench but we are always having a good time.” The rebels had another 8 minute overtime, their first line started the overtime, the uproar of the crowd was infuriating, so much happening in a short amount of time. And then it was all over in the blink of an eye, the Hibbing Bluejackets’ number 25 had scored from the top of the circles and hit the left post and in. It was all over for the Rebels. It was a very hard-fought game and it is sad to say the season was over but we had a great season. The Rebels ended their season with a record of 12-13. The season was one to remember for all of the players, but the many young players look forward to their future years playing with the Rebels. Julia Matson and Raechel Painovich are the only players from Hinckley that play girls hockey. When asked what our favorite part about the season was, Julia responded,” I love the team, this was the most fun I have had in a sport.” Raechel answered similarly with,” This year was one to remember, the seniors will be greatly missed, but I am looking forward to next year with a fun group of girls.” As the season comes to a close the team realizes the abundance of fun they had and the memories made. Congratulations on a great season. 2/11/2020 0 Comments Acquitted,Most of us have heard the issue on Donald Trump’s impeachment. The Democratic side of this debate says that Trump's phone call to Ukraine was a complete abuse of powers. The Republican argument is that what he did was wrong but it is not impeachable. The country was in a state of political drama and we were are all waiting for the outcome of these pressing issues.
The Senate has voted to acquit our President, Donald Trump, on the issue of impeachment, last Wednesday. The impeachment trial was very tense, as Mitt Romney became the first Senator to vote to remove from office a president from the same party. The fight for and against impeachment was a hard four-month process. This was a hard fought battle, but is only the beginning of the upcoming campaign for presidency. |
