The Varsity Moose Lake Area Rebels hockey team ended their season last Tuesday in triple overtime at Hibbing Memorial Arena. The Rebels put up a good fight, being the so-called underdogs going into this game because they had lost to the Hibbing-Chisholm Bluejackets twice in the regular season. The Rebels came out strong but got scored on about half way through the first period. Moose Lake gave up a breakaway on their power play so Hibbing capitalized and scored a short-handed goal. After the first period, the score was 1-0 and the shots were 14-6. The rebels hit the ice running in the second period and Raechel Painovich a sophomore on the team scored her 10th goal of the season to tie it up. The second period was fairly even with the shots being 11-6. The game was getting very intense with both teams laying everything on the line because the season's end was at risk. Moose Lake came out firing in the third determined to win but gave up a goal 5 minutes in. The Rebels started to get nervous but still confident they could put another puck in the net. And that they did, a 7th grader Sandra Ribich scored a goal to tie it up 2-2, the momentum was with the Rebels but unfortunately, they could not score a goal to win so they went into their first overtime. The 1st overtime was 8 minutes, both teams had many chances but remained scoreless. The Zamboni resurfaced after the first overtime, as the Rebels would go out for a 17 minute overtime after. Both teams were desperate to get a win but the legs were starting to get tired and they were running on pure adrenaline. The 17 minutes went by very fast but still, both teams were unable to score a goal. They were now into the 3rd overtime which was going to be 8 minutes. Chris Gamst the head coach was interviewed between the overtimes, he said,'' I believe in this hard-working team that we can beat Hibbing if we give it everything we have got. I am not worried at this point in the game, it is stressful on the bench but we are always having a good time.” The rebels had another 8 minute overtime, their first line started the overtime, the uproar of the crowd was infuriating, so much happening in a short amount of time. And then it was all over in the blink of an eye, the Hibbing Bluejackets’ number 25 had scored from the top of the circles and hit the left post and in. It was all over for the Rebels. It was a very hard-fought game and it is sad to say the season was over but we had a great season. The Rebels ended their season with a record of 12-13. The season was one to remember for all of the players, but the many young players look forward to their future years playing with the Rebels. Julia Matson and Raechel Painovich are the only players from Hinckley that play girls hockey. When asked what our favorite part about the season was, Julia responded,” I love the team, this was the most fun I have had in a sport.” Raechel answered similarly with,” This year was one to remember, the seniors will be greatly missed, but I am looking forward to next year with a fun group of girls.” As the season comes to a close the team realizes the abundance of fun they had and the memories made. Congratulations on a great season.
