“I am very anxious for the season to start, I know it will be a good season,” says Senior Forward Johnny Kordiak when asked how he feeling going to into the season. That’s right, the boys’ basketball season is beginning next week. Last season, the Jaguars were very successful; they won the conference and section title and on top of that, finished fifth in the state. This year, however, they will be without four of their graduated starters. This means that younger players and this year’s senior will have to step up and fill those roles. They will have 10 returning players to the varsity team, 9 of which are seniors. However, it is noted that many of these players did not get much varsity playing time but Coach Kreft is confident in their abilities and is excited to see what they will do. On this topic, Coach Kreft also comments that “I think a lot of our opponents will think we will be down this year because we graduated so many from last years team… so I'm excited to see us surprise some teams with how well we can play.” The Jaguars have accomplished many things in past season, however, in order to have a winning season they must start small and work their way up. Coach Kreft would like to see a conference and then section title this season. This is something they will strive for in every practice and game. Above all, however, Coach Kreft aims to grow the team’s enjoyment of the game and to “work together as a tight-knit team to achieve as much as they can.” The players of boys basketball team also have goals in mind. Johnny Kordiak says that on behalf of the team, is determined to “beat Pine City.” The team split with the Dragons last year in a fierce battle. Senior Point Guard, Anders Prater also comments that with hard work and tenacity he can see the Jaguars “beating Pine City and take home the conference championship for the third year in a row.” Regardless of the loss of players from last year, Coach Kreft still expects the same amount of strength to be brought to the table. This season, they have a large number of players and of those players, many are able to play many positions. Versatility will be a key part of their success this year. He also comments that their returning guard play from past years will aid in the strength of their team and that a positive attitude and a willingness to work hard and improve will make their season a successful one. “I am looking forward to the games against pine city, I love playing in those close high intensity games especially when there is a big crowd,” says Anders Prater when asked what he is most looking forward to this year. This has been one of the Jaguars’ biggest competition in past years. Every year, the Jaguars look forward to playing them in search for good match and ultimately a win. Another team that Coach Kreft expects to be evenly matched with them is Rush City. As for outside their conference, he expects there to be very good competition such as Cromwell-Wright to name one, who is returning their nearly every player from last year’s line-up. All things considered, the Jaguars will face some tough competition but with hard work each and every day, they will be able to have a successful season. Coach Kreft is eager to seeing what this group of athletes will do and looks forward to a great season with them. We hope to see the stands packed and the fans cheering them on at every game.
