The HFHS drama club premiered their latest musical: “Aladdin Jr.” on Wednesday, November 7th. The musical stars sophomore Lathaniel Kroschel as Aladdin. Lathaniel has only ever been in traditional plays previous to this one, not only is it his first musical but it is his first time playing lead as well. I sat down with Lathaniel on Thursday morning to ask him how he felt the Wednesday night premiere went and to try and find out what it was like to play the lead in his first ever musical. Q: Alright first and foremost, what is it like to be in this rendition of Aladdin? A: It has been a really good time, it’s nice because everyone is doing their part and everyone is having fun. Q: How do you think your premiere went last night? A: It went really well, obviously there were some things that we could fix but nothing big went wrong that the crowd would notice you know. It went really well but in our minds we know we can do even better. Q: How many plays have you been in before Aladdin? A: Well in third grade, at my old school I did Alice in Wonderland and that was quite the story. Me and my brothers played dodo birds. Then in seventh grade here at Hinckley I was in Robin Hood. Q: What was it like when you found out you had been cast as Aladdin? A: Well, I didn’t actually see the cast list myself, when I got to school that day a bunch of people came up to me saying, “Congrats, congrats” and I was like, “For what?” and they told me I got the part of Aladdin. The first thing I thought was, holy cow that is a lot of lines. How am I going to remember that? Q: That leads right into my next question? How did you manage all the lines and songs that you had to memorize? A: Well for the first couple weeks I just read out of the book at practice and didn’t take it to seriously, then Corrila just said, “Scripts away” one day and I didn’t have all the lines memorized so I practiced really hard with my sister and with my friends they really helped. Q: What is your favorite scene from the play? A: I really like the cave of wonders scene, because the set and the props are really amazing. Corilla and Terry Clark did really good on the props for that scene.
