Sam Bostrom’s Father died while she was still in the womb. Seventeen years after his passing Sam drew a picture to commemorate his life as well as demonstrate her likeness to her father. The piece, originally titled “A Picture Not Taken” Depicts Sam at age seventeen next to her father when he was seventeen. We asked Sam a few questions about her inspiration for the piece and what it means to her. Q: Can you give us a quick description of the piece? A: Well I used my dad’s senior picture that he took when he was seventeen, and then a picture of myself from this year, I drew us next to each other like we were taking a picture together. I explain it to people as a picture that I could pull up on my phone to show someone what my dad looks like, I feel like it is a picture that we would take together on a nice summer day at a family event or something. Q: What was your inspiration for this piece? A: Well I am going to be on my own soon and I have pictures of me with my mom, and pictures with me and my brother but I don’t have any pictures of me and my dad. So I guess I made one so I can have something to remember him by. Q: How long did it take you to complete the drawing? A: Well I started with the photo of him and I tried to draw him about five or six times and I took all of those drawings and I used them and the picture for reference. With those references I took about one hour and drew him completely. When that was done I added myself in to the drawing and I had drawn myself before so it only took about an hour for that. So it took a lot of time but really the final drawing took two hours. Q: Is it nice to have the drawing now so you can say here is what my dad looked like? A: It’s nice cause I can say this is my dad and show it to people but, when I first finished it I couldn’t even look at it because I would just start crying. Q: Do you think you got your dad’s features right? A: Yes, I knew I got it right when I showed my mom because she started bawling, and that really let me know it looked like my dad. The piece, featured below, is a pencil drawing of Sam at age seventeen next to her father when he was seventeen. Sam won awards for the piece at both the Pine City and East Central art show, you can see it on display in Mr. Richter’s Room.
