The Lady Rebels were on the road last Thursday night for a playoff game in International Falls. The International Falls Broncos were the #3 seed in section 7 and Moose Lake Rebels were the #6 seed. It was a hostile environment for the Rebels from the start of the game. It was a fast paced game as soon as the puck dropped, with both teams getting many scoring chances early. The Broncos scored a goal three minutes into the game and then the Rebels answered with a goal of their own late in the period. The score was 1-1 going into the 2nd period. The Rebels played solid hockey to start the 2nd period, but couldn’t find the back of the net. The Broncos added 2 goals and led 3-1 heading into the final frame. The Lady Rebels worked hard for the remainder of the game, but the Broncos goalie shut them down and spoiled the comeback for the Rebels. The Broncos speed proved to be too much for Moose Lake to handle down the stretch. The shots were 38-16 in favor of the home team. The Broncos ended the Rebel’s season with a 3-1 win. It was a disappointing way to end a great season for the Rebels. Although the Rebels were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, they proved they could skate with any team this year. Reflecting back on the season as a whole, the Rebels gained a lot of valuable experience to carry forward for next season. Every season is a learning experience and the Rebels will learn from their mistakes and start building for next year. Their record of 9-15-1 is down from last year, but they have made many improvements throughout this season. Many of the games they lost this year were close games and overtime losses. The Rebels averaged 1 goal per game this season. Moving forward the Rebels need to score more goals per game to be in contention next year. They will lose 5 seniors this year and the returning players need to improve to become a more offensive team. One of the seniors graduating this spring is forward Ashley Golly from Hinckley. Ashley played five years for the Rebels and will be missed. Returning players from Hinckley next year will be junior defense Abby Painovich and 8th grade forward Raechel Painovich. Looking back, some of the high points this year include a 5-3 record in the conference, only allowing 3 goals per game, playing in the Schwan’s Cup, and winning in overtime against the Northshore Storm. The Rebels at times this year played with a lot of confidence and perseverance. There are many teams within the conference that have large rosters of 30 or more players and the Rebels competed with all of them with only 19 skaters. One thing that can’t be overlooked this season is the great work ethic the players put in all year on and off the rink. Many players worked after hours on different elements of their game to help the team win. Hard work and dedication does not always show up on the scoreboard, but will pay dividends into the upcoming seasons. The players should be proud of a successful season and we look forward to watching them improve next year. Go Lady Rebels!!
