The HFHS drama club premiered their latest musical: “Aladdin Jr.” on Wednesday, November 7th. The musical stars sophomore Lathaniel Kroschel as Aladdin. Lathaniel has only ever been in traditional plays previous to this one, not only is it his first musical but it is his first time playing lead as well. I sat down with Lathaniel on Thursday morning to ask him how he felt the Wednesday night premiere went and to try and find out what it was like to play the lead in his first ever musical. Q: Alright first and foremost, what is it like to be in this rendition of Aladdin? A: It has been a really good time, it’s nice because everyone is doing their part and everyone is having fun. Q: How do you think your premiere went last night? A: It went really well, obviously there were some things that we could fix but nothing big went wrong that the crowd would notice you know. It went really well but in our minds we know we can do even better. Q: How many plays have you been in before Aladdin? A: Well in third grade, at my old school I did Alice in Wonderland and that was quite the story. Me and my brothers played dodo birds. Then in seventh grade here at Hinckley I was in Robin Hood. Q: What was it like when you found out you had been cast as Aladdin? A: Well, I didn’t actually see the cast list myself, when I got to school that day a bunch of people came up to me saying, “Congrats, congrats” and I was like, “For what?” and they told me I got the part of Aladdin. The first thing I thought was, holy cow that is a lot of lines. How am I going to remember that? Q: That leads right into my next question? How did you manage all the lines and songs that you had to memorize? A: Well for the first couple weeks I just read out of the book at practice and didn’t take it to seriously, then Corrila just said, “Scripts away” one day and I didn’t have all the lines memorized so I practiced really hard with my sister and with my friends they really helped. Q: What is your favorite scene from the play? A: I really like the cave of wonders scene, because the set and the props are really amazing. Corilla and Terry Clark did really good on the props for that scene.

The days are getting shorter and the weather is getting colder. That can only mean one thing, hockey season has arrived. The boys’ hockey team just started practice and are looking forward to their season. They will begin practice already on Monday, 11/12, and their first game not far behind on the last friday of November. The Pine City Area Dragons’ hockey team has been successful in previous seasons but are looking to step it up this year. They welcome back 6 starting defenseman, both of their goalies and several forwards. Overall, they will have 23 returning players, including two of our very own Hinckley Finlayson Students; Howard Hodena and Samuel Stapek. They will rely on their seniority and experience very much this year but they know that will not be the only thing they need. To be successful, they need to work hard each and every game and practice as well have leaders to exemplify this. “These guys know what it takes to win games and are willing to put in the time and effort,” says Coach Grant Nicoll in response to what he is most confident about going into the season. The Dragons are expecting a very strong season and that comes with great effort and responsibility. Coach Nicoll is expecting the most from his team. He emphasizes that they will work hard to represent the program on and off the ice. With 16 returning varsity letter winners, he expects those athletes to step up and fill leadership roles. Going into the season with goals in mind is a crucial part of success. Coach Nicoll shares with us his goals as a team for the season: 1) winning the conference championship for the 4th straight year and 2) being able to compete in the state tournament. The state tournament is not only a great accomplishment but would prove they have seen growth as they have been knocked out in the semifinal round of playoffs in previous years. These goals are very attainable so they look forward to lacing up the skates and going out to get them. Their schedule is also packed full of great competition but Coach Nicoll specifically points out that, “Monticello and North Branch have to be the top foes. Chisago Lakes and Princeton will also be tough.” The results of these games will also be a huge indicator of where they sit in the playoffs. The Dragons have an exciting season ahead of them and love to the fans cheering them on. They play their home games at the Pine City Civic Center in Pine City so come on our and support your boys’ hockey team. 11/2/2018 0 Comments The Puck Drops MondayBy: Anderson Prater
As fall sports wrap up this year the first varsity winter sport to begin is Girls Hockey. The Moose Lake Area (MLA) Hockey team has already started practicing. The girls began practices October 29th and are looking forward to an exciting season. They graduated four seniors last year including their goalie so a big key to their success this season will be the new goalie stepping up and filling the role. They are also working on a new forecheck they hope to use to disrupt their opponents and produce more goals than last year. Hinckley has two players who co-op with the team (Abigail and Raechel Painovich). The MLA Hockey team will play in their first scrimmage of the year on Monday November 5th against Duluth Marshall at the MARS arena. By Abby Painovich
The Jaguar Football Team’s season came an end last Saturday, October 27th, in Deer River. It was the semi-final round of playoffs and the Jags were coming into the game with some momentum; two wins from beating East Central both in the regular season and in the first round of playoffs. The Jaguars held on through the game, putting up 6 points of their own, but it was not enough compared to the 27 that the Warrior had put up by the end of the game. Coach Hopkins is not disappointed in his team, but rather the opposite. He is very proud of the way his team played in their last game. He knew that Deer River was going to be tough competition. But the Jaguars never let up. They fought to the very end; much like their season. Coach hopkins was also impressed at the way the Jaguars turned things around at the end of the season, winning three out of their four last games. “The season was full of building confidence and gaining experience” says Coach Brad Hopkins. “We were a very young team that did not have very much varsity experience coming back.” The Jaguars began their season with six straight losses. They did not let this bring them down however. They took these games and looked at what they could improve in order to have a successful outcome. And that they did. The ended the regular season with two wins heading into the playoffs, where they would beat East Central yet again. “Ending the season with a 3-7 record was not the ideal record, but what we took away from the season will far exceed that,” Coach Hopkins adds. Senior OL, Conor Romans, comments, “It was a very rough season for some of us but in the end it was fun and I would never have given it up.” Even though the Jaguars did not have a winning record, they ended the season with some pretty significant accomplishments. They won the “BIG CAT” trophy between the two big cat schools: the HFHS Jaguars and the Rush City Tigers. Then, in their first playoff game, they were able to fight back from a 16 point deficit and put up 22 points, winning the game 48-42. This shows the tremendous heart the team gained throughout their season. Lastly, almost all of their roster was able to receive a Varsity Letter. Coach Hopkins was impressed with each individual’s ability to step up and fill roles. “We had many players fill in as first year starters... many of them will be returning next year! Having a majority of an offense or defense built of sophomores and juniors will have its moments... but those moments add up to experience…” Next season the Jaguars are hoping to have a winning a season. They expect to be able to do this with their many returning players, most of which are varsity starters which Coach Hopkins believes will be the key to getting back on top. Their returning front line on offense will also be one of their greater strengths as well as returning linebackers. Above all, experience will the most crucial component to a successful season. Coach Hopkins thanks the seniors for their work throughout the years, and looks to forward to an exciting season next year! |
