Did you know that in March 100 teams will compete in a robotics competition in hopes of getting a spot in the FIRST championship. First is an acronym that that stands for: For Inspiration and Recognition of Science. It is an organization that every year they hold a “FIRST Robotics Competition” for high school teams from all around the world to compete in. At our school, Mr. Joe Ranger is the leader of the robotics team. He tells us that “every competition has a different task which remains unknown until the FIRST kickoff. In January the team will travel to Duluth to learn about this year’s task. Teams then have a short 6-week window of time to build and program a robot that will complete the task.” He adds, “The tasks have ranged from picking up gears and placing them into towers, shooting wiffle balls through hoops, using nerf balls to attack castles and stacking up cubes to "power up" lifts and cranes.” Mr. Ranger is the lead mentor of Robotics. With every new years comes more surprises, new obstacles but nevertheless, a great time. This year in particular, he looks forward to working with a new group of students and being able to have the opportunity to “tackle brand new challenges.” Senior members, Conor Romans and Trevor Nolan also add that they are looking forward to working with their team and friends and to get further than they finished last year. Mr. Ranger also expects to improve in their performance at the competition: “Last year was our first year that we placed high enough in the regional competition to earn a place in the playoffs. We are hoping to not only score high enough to return to the playoffs, but win our way forward and place higher.” The students involved in robotics also have some goals in mind. Collectively, they will work towards not only bettering their standings from last year, but also to accomplish team building and communications skills with other teams. They also have noticed a recurring challenge with the climbing abilities of their robot in years past, so that is something they will focus on more this year. Senior Conor Romans tells us that his personal goal for this year is to learn how to wire properly. The official kickoff will be Saturday, January 5th, and they will begin to build their robot the following Monday. Robotics is for students that are in 9-12 grades but 7th and 8th graders are also invited to come check it out.
