By Anderson Prater On June 11th 2018 A group of Hinckley-Finlayson students departed on the trip of a lifetime. They headed from Minneapolis- Saint Paul International Airport to Frankfurt Germany. They were traveling with students and chaperones from four other schools (East Central, Pine City, Braham, and Mora) who all take a trip to Germany together every two years. They spent 17 days together exploring Europe. The group arrived at Frankfurt international airport after a twelve hours of being but the traveling wasn’t done yet. As soon as they left the airport, the group boarded a charter bus that drove them to the small town of Bacharach which sits on the Rhine river. Here the students walked around and got their first meal in Germany. On that first night they stayed in an old castle overlooking the river that had been turned into a youth hostel. The next day they were on the road again, they took the charter bus to the tour the ruins of an old castle in Heidelberg. For the next two days the group hit some tourist locations and took in the German countryside on their way to Ludwigsburg, the first big city on their list. When the group got to Ludwigsburg they began the home stay portion of the tour. During the home stay each student lived with the family of a student in Ludwigsburg. The Americans got to learn about German culture, experience school and live in their host family’s household for a few days. While in Ludwigsburg the students did many things on their own and with their host families like visiting amusement parks, going on more high ropes courses or watching Germany v Mexico in the world cup. Finally the home stay came to an end so the group said goodbye to their host families and made the seven hour journey from Ludwigsburg to Interlaken, Switzerland. In Interlaken, they hiked in the Swiss Alps, ate genuine Swiss chocolate and handmade Swiss cheese and swam in a lake full of ice cold water that was fed straight from the mountains. From there they traveled to Austria but on the way they made a stop in Lichtenstein so they could check another country off their list. In Austria they took a river cruise and did a high ropes course. The group stayed in Salzburg, Austria for a few days where they toured a salt mine and watched a concerto. To round out the trip, the group went to Munich, Germany for a few days. While in Munich they took a bike tour that followed the important locations and headquarters of the Nazi party. And finally the large group went to the medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber where they were given a city tour by a “night watchman” and explored a city that still had the original buildings from before the 1300’s. The next morning, they loaded the bus and headed off to Frankfurt to board their flight home. This trip was described by students as “the trip of a lifetime that I will never forget” “a life changing experience” and “a great opportunity to experience a new culture.”

9/14/2018 0 Comments Jaguar Football Takes on BrahamBy Abby Painovich
Last Friday night, the Jaguar football team traveled to Mesabi East where they battled all the way through the game that they lost 38-0. The team put up a great effort but had several tough breaks and too many penalties which resulted in a loss for the jaguars. Tonight, the team is hoping to end their two game losing streak and seek revenge on the Braham Bombers. The Bombers have ended the Jagaurs’ season in the conference something for three years in a row now. They, however, are looking to change that. The Jags are excited to be back out on the field, and not just any field, but their home turf. Now without the two hours bus rides and with the home crowds, the Jaguars are ready to get their season back on track Friday night.. Coach Brad Hopkins commented that, “playing a conference rival is always exciting with conference and section seedlings riding on the game.” He is expecting to pull of a win tonight, regardless of the teams history against Braham. Senior lineman, Conor Romans, also commented that he as well as the team “is confident heading into this game.” The team will focus on their defensive abilities and srtategies tonight as they have been working at “find(ing) ways to attack the weakness of Braham’s defense and trying to be creative and unpredictable on defense,” according to Coach Hopkins. All games are important, however, tonight’s game will be especially important because winning would not only not only change the momentum of their season but would act as a confidence booster iven that Braham is a rival as well as a conference and section team. Coach Hopkins also added that “this game could have big implications on the conference and playoffs ahead.” The team has been improving each week, gaining experience, and even though it is early in the season, they feel they have what it takes. In order to walk away from the game with a “W”, Coach Hopkins told us that they will need to limit their own errors and capitalize on Brahams. He continued to say, “we have made errors in the last games which turned out to be game changing mistakes... we need to limit those and we will be very competitive.” However, strtatey is only half of the game. The other half will come from teamwork and communication. Conor Romas says that they will, “need to continue to work together as a team on and off the field” in order to win games. With all this in mind, the Jaguar football team will head out onto field with a full head of steam, and take the Bombers by storm. The game will begin at 7pm and it will be a blackout. So wear your black to show your school pride and come out to cheer on your football boys! 9/14/2018 0 Comments Volleyball Weekly Recap: 9/10-9/14By Avery Degerstrom
To start off their week the volleyball team traveled to Isle. Both the JV and Varsity teams took a win. Being that Isle has no C-team our girls came with, cheered and kept stats. JV started strong but a few little errors set them back and they lost the first game. They kept the momentum and erased the silly mistakes to take the second game from the Huskies. In a short game to 15 the Jags didn’t let up they won 15-5. With a new rotation and great coaching these girls are improving every time they step on the court. Varsity took the Huskies in 3 games. The Jags came out with confidence and determination in their eyes, looking for their first win of the season. They won the first two games one even with a score of 25-??. With the crowd louder than ever and the excitement of a possible sweep the Jaguars took a commanding 9-0 lead to start game 3. The Huskies didn’t roll over though, they kept battling inching their way back up to an even score with the Jags. It was quite the game. Spectators on the edge of their seats, as the scoreboard says 24-24 Isle with the serve. Two serves later and the score read 26-24, the Jaguars had won. To keep up the excitement from Tuesday the Jaguars welcomed the East Central Eagles to their home court on Thursday. All 3 of our Jaguar volleyball teams came out victorious. C-team won in 5, going neck and neck all night with the Eagles. It was a tough fought battle but we came out on top. Jv won the match in 3 games, losing the first one but using it as motivation to come back and win the next two. Coach Smith graciously shared her take on the game last night with me. She said, “JV Volleyball won another exciting 3-set match last night at home against East Central. After dropping the first set 22-25, they came back fighting to win the next two sets 25-18 and 15-13. Thank you to all the supportive fans for creating such a fun, loud atmosphere to play in. Good job to the Lady Jags on earning another win on our special Blackout/Parent's Night!”. The varsity girls had to play all five games in order to take the match. The gym was hot and they were tired but that didn’t slow down their momentum. They lost a close first game and it was back and forth after that with alternating wins. All were close suspenseful games but the most suspenseful one by far was the last game. It was the all or nothing, the make it or break it game. The Jags started out with the lead but the Eagles battled back. Some crazy volleys and good plays later and the Jaguars win the game 15-13. It was a very good week of volleyball with all wins for the Jags. 9/13/2018 0 Comments Meet Charlotte Rieker
Q: What is the biggest difference between your hometown and Hinckley? A: It is smaller here and you get everywhere by car. In Cologne you can go everywhere by train and they come every ten minutes. You are more mobile I think. Also the people are different. Q: What has been the hardest part of living America? A: At the beginning you don’t know anybody so you are like alone and don’t really know what you can do or what you should or should not do. Q: Do you do any activities or sports in Germany? A: I go to a fitness center in Germany and I play the piano. Q: What are some differences between HFHS and your school in Germany? A: Here you can’t wear anything what you want, and in my school you can wear what you want. We don't have like a dress code. Also, the subjects are different- for example, you have child development or textile design, and we just have normal subjects like math, German and English. Q: Is school easier or harder in America? A: Easier I think. Q: Have you or will you try any sports or activities? A: Yes, I would like try basketball because my host family also plays basketball so we could go together but I'm not sure yet. Q: What is your favorite food from America? A: Mac 'n' Cheese or Burgers. Q: What Is your favorite food from Germany? A: Potatoes with sour cream. By Kenidy Cessna
New School Year, Clean School. This past summer a few students, Hinckley graduates, and a couple staff members assisted the janitors at both the elementary and the high school. The janitors at the elementary greatly appreciate the help that everyone gave. The students that helped out at the elementary are; Chad Kohl and Ryan Rabe. The newest edition who became the new board washer is Gary McFarland. The Board Washer has many responsibilities; the title doesn’t do it justice. When people see the Hinckley Finlayson High School, the hard working people arguably aren’t given enough credit. They help maintain a clean school, keeps its good conditions, and make sure it’s in working conditions. “The student workers I have had at the elementary school the workforce is very fortunate.” says hinckley elementary school janitor, Ron Bonn. Thank You to all of the volunteers at our schools! 9/7/2018 0 Comments Welcome Back!By Abby Painovich

Already next Monday, a groundbreaking ceremony will be held for the new addition to our school. Later on that week, the jaguar football team will hold their first home game of the season. Their opponent, the Braham Bombers, beat them in two games last season, one of which ended their season. Next friday night they will be hungry for revenge so come out and support your jags! Also beginning very soon is the fall musical; Aladdin. Auditions will be held next week in the auditorium. For more information talk to Corrilla Clark or pickup an audition packet located between the band and choir room. Then, coming up the first week of October is homecoming week. With 2 weeks of practice in the rear view mirror, the Jaguar Cross Country Team came out strong in their second meet of the season. Yesterday evening the team competed at the Pine City Golf Course, where they would go on to take home 4 ribbons, and 1 medal. In the junior high girls race, Reese Hartl led the race and never looked back, winning her second 1st place ribbon. Isabella Bennett, not far behind, ended up finishing 10th. In the junior high boys race, Brody Froehling kept his head high and was looked forward to earning his 8th place ribbon. To follow the Junior High Boys, the Varsity girls team was up next, so as Audrey, Hallie, Abby, Sophie, Raechel, and Christeva stepped up to the line and took their places, on the sound of the gun they were off. Not knowing that Raechel would end up breaking the course record with a 22:44 5k time. Now moving onto the Varsity Boys Team, with Cedric Lafave leading the pack and Anders Prater and Brock Bjerke following behind, they came out with an overall 4th place. With the help from Dylan, Jacob, Sam, and Josey. We would like to make a special recognition for Cedric Lafave with him winning his first Varsity race!! Last but certainly not least the Junior Varsity races in which the boys would run first, followed by the girls. In the boys race Johnny Kordiak earned himself a 10th place ribbon and with him and the team they would end up placing 5th overall. Lastly the girls race, with not many numbers the JV girls could not compete for a team score. But individually Killeen, Emily, and Ava were all pretty close with their times and would all finish relatively close. So overall the Pine City meet was very successful in many ways, and we hope that the rest of the season goes as planned. Looking Forward the Jaguar Cross Country team will have many more meets, but here are a few dates for the upcoming meets: Tuesday, September 11 @ Mora, Monday, September 17 @ Pierz, and Saturday, September 22 @ Milaca. We hope that the rest of the Cross Country season goes well for all of the participating athletes!! 9/7/2018 0 Comments Jaguar Volleyball Weekly Recap On Tuesday to kick off the school year the Hinckley-Finlayson volleyball team hosted their first home game. C-team, JV and varsity were all defeated by the visiting Rush City Tigers.
C-team took the first game of 5 but then, the Tigers picked up their pace and won the second game, a nail biter that ended 27-29. Rush City had the momentum to finish off the last 3 sets and win the match 4 games to 1. JV started off powerful stealing the first game from Rush City. The Tigers came back swinging in the second game and took one from the Jaguars. The very close third game had everyone on the edge of their seats but the Tigers came out on top with a final score of 11-15. The varsity team almost snuck out a couple wins but fell just short to the Tigers. One game with a score of 23-25. An exciting match to watch to say the least. A prominent strength of these nine girls is their serving capabilities. They missed very few and had an abundant amount of aces. On Thursday the girls went to visit the Bombers of Braham. Neither C-team, JV or varsity could pull off an overall win but that didn’t make it any less of an exciting night. C-team lost last night to the Braham Bombers. They fought hard but just couldn’t pull it off. Coach Smith gave us her take on the JV game last night, “The JV team struggled to stay in a consistent rhythm last night, and lost in straight sets to a solid Braham squad on the road. They will regroup tonight at practice for a quick turn-around before heading to Pine City tomorrow for a tournament.” The varsity team started slow losing the first 2 games 12-25 and 13-25. They came back in the 3rd game, they had Braham frazzled. Playing hard and feeding off of the energy of the crowd the Jags took game 3, 25-23. They carried their momentum into the 4th set it was just too late. The Bombers took that game 21-25. Overall it was a good week of volleyball. This whole group of girls works hard in games and at practices to positively represent our school. Come out and encourage them. The next home game is Thursday the 13th, C-team and JV at 6 varsity to follow. 9/7/2018 0 Comments Meet the New StaffBy Anderson Prater To kick off the 2018-19 school year we wanted to get to know the new staff who came to work at HFHS this year so we at the Jaguar Journal did a little Q & A with the latest editions to the High School.
